OK, I just read an article that said DOMS is actually bad for you. It said it is brought on by overtraining. It explained it as being tiny tears in muscle fibers that create swelling and there is no cure for it except taking tylenol or aspirin to control it. Sounds to me like something I want to happen to my muscles. The whole point of me working out is to get them to swell. Although the article was in the back of a Newsweek magazine which I'm sure isn't the best place to get fitness info. Just wanted to hear you guys input on this.

DOMS is not bad for you. It is a result of lifting. After a while it will fade, in that you will not get it each time you lift. DOMS is a result of tiny tears that is true, but by resting and eating right it heals and those tears become larger muscles. Also new studies have shown that having DOMS or not is neither a sign of a good or bad workout. Some have it each time, some do not. Do not worry, only take concern if the pain is sharp and lasts longer than 3 days or so.

that's a bunch of bs.....and you take ibuprofen for then inflammation postworkout if it's really bad...neither aspirin nor acetaminophen helps with that....
I train rarely so I get DOMS all the time but I also get progressively stronger.....

I read somewhere (and I would really have to dig to try to find the study) that taking an anti-inflammatory (like ibuprofen) after a workout reduces the muscle gains.
Presumably this is because it is the inflammatory response that helps with muscle repair and growth.
On a side note, aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, so probably has the same effect as ibuprofen.
Both have their own side effects in addition, so I would say steer clear.

princess you're right on the money I have read the same thing...but many people are willing to sacrifice some of the gains and not feel the DOMS...i have DOMs after most workouts esp for big bodyparts and just suck it up...

Theres a lot of good info around to day concerning health issues but there is also a lot of bad info. unfortunatly most of us have a tendacey to think that if its in black and white it must be right. I have seen paople back up there posts on this board with articals rather than study's, for instance just because a famouse body builder writes an artical on a certain method he uses it doesn't mean that its right. I would stay clear of articals if your looking to get some knowledge and look to the scientific community its very accessable on the web. I see doms as my reward for a good workout. If i don;t ache after the gym I feel like I have waisted my time.

iron monga although I hear what you're saying....dismissing article info right out is not necessarily a great idea either...lots of useful info can be found in magazine articles...these places often recite these studies in their articles...serving as a secondary source for that information...and if the info is somewhat sketchy then u can always go to direct resource and check it out....I find that most articles are true to what they say...you obviously have to adjust certain things like the volume that you see in bodybuilding mags or types of things b/c they take steroids and have quick recovery times....however u can still get useful info out of those articles nevertheless...
some bizarre things do come up, in this recent issue if muscle and fitness there's an article about a bodybuilder who's a martial artist....and it claims he can jump over avg size people and kick a target 11 feet in the air.....11 feet in the air...this is hair than the basket....by a foot and u're hitting it with your feet....i am very skeptical about things like these...but nevertheless...most of the info is solid...
