not necasserly...........are you doing a full range of motion?.........many people throw loads of weight around, but incorrectly. Make sure you get a good stretch make it hurt you stretch so far, and pull from the back and squeeze for a count of two.

If your not feeling anything back there then your not doing something right. Try lowering your weight and really focus on your back contracting, sqeeze it of, like big andrew says all the time, quality not quantity. Focus on your muscles working back there, try to picture them working in your mind, lifting is mental as well as physical. Some exercises to make sure you feel the back, hyperextensions, seated cable rows, weighted declince situps, and of course DEADLIFTS and SQUATS. Do any of these, 4 sets 8-14 reps, you feel your back then. Hope this helps. Peace!

Yeah, both responses are good. Remember, the object is not the amount of weight you use or the amount of reps you do, it is to get the back muscles to do as much work as possible.

I don't load to much weight on there i'm in my mass cycle right now so i'm shooting for lower reps. This morning i can feel it in my back now it's sore. Next time i do back i will try less weight and just concentrate more on form. Should i contract my mucles when i pull the weight up like at the top of a bicep movement?

I only "feel" it in my back after the workout. I feel that burn during it but I could nto say it is a Pump per se. It takes a while, at least for me to get even that from my back. One thing I am doing differently right now that really makes my upper lat area scream is the supersets of front-to-back lat pulldowns(see my journal). Those really fry my lats!:dumbbell:

Make sure you pull your shouldr blaeds together like you are trying to grab something in between them, and keep your shoulders down away from your ears. On rows, think about your arms grazing your ribcage as they squeeze back and push your chest out a little while pulling your shoulder blades together, you should feel a strong contraction.
On all back exercises, try putting your thumbs over the bar instead of around it, so your hands are more like hooks, this is supposed to minimize biceps involvement and force the back muscles to work harder.
Try standing lat press downs, if you aren't already doing them, they are akin to pullovers, but I think you fel the lat involvement a lot more.
I find it helps my clients tune into their back muscles if I remind them to initiate the movements with their back, not their arms, first. Think blades together before arms start moving - you should feel the difference. It can be hard to integrate muslce group, our arms want to brute it all themselves, use your body before you let the arms get involved. Think of your arms as the hooks that attach your back muscles to the bar and use the back muscles top do the work.
good luck!
