Hi everyone,

My roomates and I wake up at about 4:45 every morning to workout, and we rarely eat anything before our workout. I'm about thirty pounds heavier than I want to be, and I had heard that working out on an empty stomach helps burn fat. I just read in Muscle & Fitness that lifting weights on an empty stomach can actually cause you to lose muscle since there isn't anything in your stomach to build the muscles back up. Although I am trying to lose weight, I don't want to lose muscle as well. What would you all suggest I eat/drink before my workout? Thanks!

Have some oatmeal. That will supply you with some carbs instead of burning some muscle.

Thanks for the advice. Would a nutri grain breakfast bar suffice?

I would check the ingredients first....watch for sugars, fructose/glucose, fats, you don't really want that if they are present.

If you blend up oats with some whey protein in a blender, this will be a quicker absorbing meal due to the smaller particles. This is ideal when time is of the essence before a workout. Another option is a good MRP, gastric emptying occurs fairly rapidly and you can use it quicker. Nutri grain bars are enriched flour, jelly and sugar. Waste of time, no nutritional value there.

I eat cottage cheese with some chocolate protein powder sprinkled on top. Not sure if that's a good pre-workout meal though. Anyone know???
