Hi!! My question concerns eating in the evening. I keep a balanced healthy diet during the day, eating carbs until 3 in the afternoon and soup and/or salad with jogurt for dinner. Problem is, I get hungry a few hours after supper (which I eat around 6:30) and thus munch on low-salt pretzels or low-fat crackers later at night. Question is, if I am in a calorie and/or carb deficit and eat low-fat snacks at night (around 8 or so), will I gain eight anyways?

You're going to hear different views on that since different strokes work for different folks. Personally, I eat 15 minutes before going to bed, mainly for 2 reasons. One is I do my cardio when I wake up, and since I do the low carb thing, eating something that contains carbs before going to sleep gives me the necessary fuel. The other reason is I don't like the idea of depriving my body of nutrients for so many hours specially for a body that does both cardio and weight training.
And I can assure you, I have not gained weight doing this. :)

If I have to have something at night it will be a 4 egg white omelet, takes the edge off. Reason for this feeding the muscles protein while I sleep. The other reason I hate going to bed hungry and 4 egg whites are 12 grams protein no carbs and only 60 calories.

OK,thanks for the advice so far. I am not really on a low-carb diet, i just try and get MOST of my carbs before 3pm. Lordxena, what do you eat before going to bed? Usually if I eat some low-fat snack later after supper while watching some tv or studying I am not hungry that much before bedtime. That is why I'm wondering if these snacks at night will have their consequences or not.

Every meal should have some sort of protein in it. Before going to bed, casein type protein (found in yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) will be beneficial as it is one of the types slowly absorbed by the body.

Well, since I do the low carb thing, I drink a cup of soy milk, 1 low carb cracker, and 1/2 slice of peanut butter. Doesn't leave me stuffed but gently fills me.
When I was doing The Zone, I'd eat a zone bar or 2% milk.

Sometimes I'll have a glass of soy milk, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, or protein shake in water. Your can also have a piece of chicken....that will work.
