Hey guys. I have been really watching my food for the past weeks, and one thing I have noticed is that I consistantly go over on my fat grams by at least 10. First question is, will cutting down on my fat intake really help with my weight loss? Secondly, I buy things that my husband and I both eat. His intakes for everything are probably double mine, as he is 290lbs and 6ft 3. The snacks I take to work are the same snack I give him to take to work. WHat are some things we can both have, that will give him the nutrition he needs, but also help me cut back on my daily fat intake??

well, we have granola bars as snacks. Also, we have eggs and bacon for breakfast once or twice a week. I take Healthy Choice meals for lunch, and then when I come home, I make usually something container bonless skinles chicken breasts, like wraps, or spaghetti with meat sauce, fajitas and whatnot. I just don't know how much else I can take out to not have as much fat in my diet.

Don't granola bars have a lot of fat in them? Why not snack on fruit, low cal whole grain bread, a can of tuna with 1tbs of low fat or non fat mayo and mustard, veggies, protein shake in water...I dunno...just some suggestions. How much fat is in the meat sauce? Are you cooking with oil?
It's unfortunate that fat grams add up so quickly. Just out of curiosity...how much fat are you supose to be eating?

Well for starters, cut out the granola bars and bacon and eggs :( .
The bars have really high sugar and bad carbs. As for the eggs try removing the yolks and just have the white in an omlet form. Dump the bacon. Just increase the amount of eggs instead of 2 have 4. Take hard boiled eggs to work, (no yolk) and get into the habit of eating good un refined carbs. You can still have the meat sauce but use lean meat or peices of lean beef. Good fats are also found in fish, olive oil, nuts. Remember it's not only fat, but carbs also. I like to push protein, it also keeps us full longer.

Hey CristalBelle,

If you like muffins try the muffins from Wal-Mart. They have chocolate, blueberry and apple cinnamon muffins that are fat free. They're by the deli and bread area.

Instead of eggs and bacon ... try 2 pieces of 100% whole wheat toast with fat free promise butter, 4-6 egg whites, and as much jelly as you want. Almost completely fat free. Or a fat free muffin with a banana, cantaloupe, or honeydew.

If you look at all of those pre-packaged meals they're FILLED and I mean FILLED with sodium. They're horrible. We traveled for 9 months and lived in hotels ... that was the only thing we could eat and it was horrible on us. hehe Make your own lunches with the wheat bread a piece of turkey and fat free cheese ... celery and carrots ... low fat yogurt ... and a glass of milk.

Chicken wraps are good 'cept for what things people put on them. Try the fat free cheeses on yours and give him regular, fat free mayo, and veggies.

Spaghetti's not really that bad for you ... the pasta's not too much fat, prego chunky garden only has 3 grams of fat per serving and try using deer or grass fed beef for the meat it's a lot less fatening than the others.

Fajitas I have no idea. hehe Don't eat them 'cause I can't have guacamole and it ticks me off. LOL

I'm learning all this stuff too ... Just start paying attention to the fat and stuff in what you buy. But also something I've learned is that most of the fat free things in the store are PACKED with carbs. So be careful on that too.

And another thing that I've learned... Men are always going to eat whatever they want. Which sucks for me when I'm trying to diet and my boyfriend is eating a huge hamburger and fries in front of me. What I've learned to do is the following:

1. When we go out to eat, I order something good and eat a couple bites of his. Then you don't get upset with him for eating the good stuff in front of you 'cause you got to eat it too. And you're still eating pretty healthy.

2. Make him a snack pack ... I gave my boyfriend a huge box that sits in the office next to his desk. It's where I can't even see it ... and even if I fill it I just forget it's there.

3. You don't always have to have the same thing as your husband. When I'm at home if I cook something like a hamburger for him I divide the meat in half and make him a huge hamburger and put all the good stuff on it for him ... and I brown the rest of the meat and mix it with pinto beans and make myself a small chilli which is pretty good and low fat.

:)

Thanks for the help guys. Laneylou, I had never thought of muffins, and I think that would be a great way to go. I could even make them at home, and modify the recipie to lower the fat(no Wal Mart around here) I made a mistake in something I said earlier. We don't eat bacon and eggs all the time. Normally we have cereal for breakfast, just this week we were out of cereal and bacon and eggs and toast were all we had left for breakfast. Lol Maybe next weeks fat content will change when we have cereal. Also, I cook only with extra lean ground beef, and very little olive oil. I think I will just have to substitute the granola bar with something else, as I think that is where I tip my fat scale. I am supposed to be eating 34grams a day, and I usually hit around 40-45.

You're welcome CristaBelle. If you substitute the oil for applesauce in your recipe it'll be virtually fat free. A lady I used to work with was from England and she said they do that a lot there.

I found that by buying Fat Free or Reduced Fat versions of a just few things greatly reduced my fat intake. Cottage cheese, sourcream, cheeses, salad dressings, even breads all have FF or RF versions.

azredhead What kind of cottage cheese do you buy? I got some once and it was horrible. Hopefully you know of a good one because I love cottage cheese.

CristalBelle ... another good thing to add to your diet is beans. Almost all of them are very very low in fat. And there's a lot of different stuff you can do with them.

Like mixing refried beans, jalepenos, a little skim milk, fat free cheese and fat free sour cream you'll have an awesome dip and it's 1 gram of fat for the baked tostitos and a tiny bit for the bit of milk you put in the beans to soften them up...

Or a pizza crust with refried beans or black beans, fat free cheese, lettuce, olives, tomatoes, onion, salsa and you have a mexican pizza. Pretty low fat. There's a tiny bit of fat in the olives, and fat in the pizza crust. I'm not sure about pizza crust I've never really checked to see how fattening it is.

Or taking 1 can of white beans, 2 cans of tuna, diced purple onion, about a tbsp of capers, pepper, and tomatoes ... very low fat and good for you too ...

There are tons of different things you can do with them. :)

I really need help on this topic. I love things like Celery, carrots, pears, cottage cheese, milk, eggs, love english muffins, and onions. But I need help on something I can prepare for a dinner or lunch. I am 5'11" and weigh about 218lbs. If there is any suggestion that would help me greatly.

I forgot to add about the celery and carrots. Is there any substitute for the ranch dressing or french onion dip? LOL
