My Husband and I are at odds.... We have saved enough money for a machine, now we stare at eachother and I say "Elliptical!" he says "Weights!!". We are both over weight. He did lift weights back in College and was a beautiful man..... So I assume he knows what he is talking about. But with his bmi now being 32 and mine being 27 I am thinking cardio!!! But I am no pro. And I need to know from the Pro's. Cardio or weights when you are really over weight????

Personally, I'd lean to the weights. There are a bajillion differnet ways to get the cardio in there, but not as much (I don't think) for weights.

There are a ton of bodyweight exercises one can do, though.

I suspect there will be a number of differening opinions on this.

I'm for the weights. haha...

Elipticals are good, but by building muscle you help burn calories.

You can also get a pretty damned good cardio workout by upping the intensity of resistance workout.

For cardio, there is always walking (with varying intensity as well), swimming, jogging, you name it....

I'd say purchase the weights. As Tim says, there are many ways to get in your cardio and all the better if you vary it. You can go for walks, run, cycle, swim...the list goes on and on. I guess what it really boils down to is what will you most likely stick with if you have it at home. Diet will be key in your wt loss regardless of which equipment you buy!!

i would say go for the weights as well..i used strictly a treadmill for about 4 months before i joined a gym. i lost weight but lost lean muscle tissue as well....it wasnt until i joined the gym and started using weights did i start to really see the inches come off and a new shape on me...i still do cardio but only 4 days a week...

Weights, reasons stated above.

A little discipline at the table and at the gym might help reduce that belly!

I would like to add my two cents to this discussion. The best excercise equipment to buy is excercise equipment that you will USE!!

Back when I was in college (which seems like a million years ago) for fun I would run 13 miles a day, many times with a weighted pack. About two years ago, I realized that i was getting tired just driving that far. So I joined FT and followed the recommended exercise program. I quit after about 2 months. Recently I started a new programme with FT. In addition to the 5 days a week schedule, I start each workout session with a 1/2 hour vigerous workout on the elliptical with a fair amount of resistance. Now the fun has come back in my workout routine. I know I will not quit from boredom. I also realize that my muscles are starving for protein after my workout so that I must adjust my nutritional intake accordingly. I am achieving noticable progress. I am more muscular than when i was in college

I fact, the only reason I am contributing to this thread is because There is a major snowstorm (yes, carivan, I dont live far from Montreal) which prevents me from going to the gym.

No one in this thread asked you what do like to do.

Therefore, I must repectfully disagree with the majority of contributors - THE BEST EXERCISE EQUIPMENT IS EQUIPMENT THAT YOU WILL USE.

The ellypical was my key to fitnes. It might not be yours. Try both weights and cardio equipment for a period of time and then ask yourself- "Which one do you enjoy more?"

I agree with you mccanntm..mostly, However, contrary to your post, I did say that "the best equipment to buy is the one that you will most likely stick with if you have it at home". Everyone here will agree that the best form of exercise is the one you enjoy doing and will stick with:)

While I agree one you would use is the key, you have to mentally prepared to use it.

I don't know how many times I was 'going to lose weight and this piece of equipment is the key to my success.'

It sat in the corner and collected dust or was a clothes hanger.

So, while one you would use is key, I may also suggest one you would use that will help you achieve the results you want and offer you the most bang for your buck.

Weights are the best way - as tim said, cardio can be done different ways fairly easily. Also lifting can get the ol heart rate pumping as much as the cardio - example - squats with 1 min to 1.5 min between sets
