frequency and intensity depend on your goals.
However, for most people, the optimal length of an intense weightlifting session is under 1 hour.
For those of you that haven't heard it from me already, this is because your recovery is largely based on two hormones: cortisol and testosterone. While cortisol is a necessary byproduct of exercise, it does tend to hinder the effects of testosterone as a recovery hormone. Both testosterone and cortisol rise steadily during exercise bouts, however, test levels peak at around 45 minutes into the session. At around the one hour mark, cortisol production overtakes testosterone production. This is not something we want.
However, some powerlifting modalities have been known to train for up to and in excess of 2 hours (Metal Militia comes to mind). I feel that, although this is not always an option, 2 shorter sessions will be more productive than 1 long session (any of the russian Sheiko influenced routines)
