I did a search, but didn't find specific exercises addressing this issue. My daughter dislocated her shoulder three years ago (she had a seizure while driving). Over the past three years her shoulder has popped out several times and it seems to happen more easily all the time and she doesn't have any problem popping it back in. I had forgotten about this and I had her at the gym doing lat pulldowns and assisted machine pull ups (bad mom?). She reminded me about her shoulder and now I'm not sure what exercises are safe for her to do. She said her doctor told her that eventually she would need surgery...I'm thinking there are exercises that can strengthen the muscle but I'm not sure what they are. Does anyone have any recommendations for specific exercises for this? I would hate for her to have to have the surgery.

Rotator Cuff. Google it and you'll get lots of info.

And she shoudl be fine doing the exercises you had her doing as long as she doesn't go too far up or down and pull it out of socket. do a slightly limited ROM, she will benefit from building strength in all the muscles related to the shoulder.

And yes, rotator cuff exercises should help.

Thanks, guys. I was wondering if it was still okay for her to be doing those pullups and pulldowns. And I did Google the rotator cuff exercises to print for her. Now I just have to drag her butt back into the gym :-).

Strengthening the scapular retractors (rhomboids, middle and lower traps) will do far more than just rotator cuff exercises.

While weak rotator cuffs can SOMETIMES play a part in a dislocation, it is ALWAYS a case of scapular dysfunction of some kind.

Thanks, wrestler. I'll definitely find some exercises to help her strengthen her scapular retractors, then. I'm really worried because the other day she dislocated her shoulder twice in one day. It happens way too easily. Thanks for the info!

Try googling "Rockwood exercises". Of the 5 exercises given, the ones I would emphasize would be the suprapinatus and infrapinatus (if they present in the order I provide, they would be the last 2). The firts one helps to hold the shoulder down while the latter pulls the shoulder back when performing other exercises. Keep the motions in mid range and keep the shoulder down. That will help keep the scapular retractors in play. Progress up till she is able to perform 2 sets of 15-20 reps. She can do it with hand weights (rotation sidelying) or cable weights. Remember control is everything.

These 2 exercises should always be the precursor before she begins any other shoulder work.
