Though I have been a member of this group for a while I have failed to consistently utilize the information until recently. So: Hello Everyone! I am very much overweight, though I “carry my weight well” which allows me to move about fairly easily. I am 23, 249lbs (as of this morning) at the beginning of November I was 238, by the end of November I was 232. All of the sudden I went up to 249, without making any drastic changes in my lifestyle. I can’t figure it out yet, that was a huge jump. Anyway, my real problem is sudden and extreme fatigue and exhaustion. I hardly have energy to get out of bed, or drive or anything. This is very unusual for me. I have to take 2 naps during the day just to make it. I don’t even have the energy to do half of a decent workout. I DO get around the same amount of sleep as I have been in recent years. Please someone point me in the right direction as far as what I should be looking at in order to find the source of this problem. Thanks! |

Check out your diet (write it down so you can see it)
how long are your naps?? if they are over 40 minutes then you may be sleeping too much which would make you more fatigue. Do go see a doctor - that really doesn't sound good -------------- Reddy All people smile in the same language |

wow that serious huh? I will definately make an appointment to see a doctor.
In the meantime I will take a close look at my diet. I assure you I am not over-doing the work outs! Though I wish that was the case, it is easy to correct that. I am WAY under-doing it at this point. Just looking at the free weights :dumbbell: and the pilates mat make me tired! |

Hi Denovas,
Hey why don't you list a typical days nutrition on this thread and let's have a look at what you are eating, how much, and what time of day. -------------- Anni ******* Quoting Michael: Your future is beckoning, pay attention to the call. |

I would consult the Doctor first like the others said.
Get a full blood series done, and then ask the doc about exercise and starting off right for you. Good Luck. -------------- If you can dream it, if you can imagine it, then you can be it, you can do it. If it is meaningful enough, and you commit the energy of your passion, you will. Denovas I'm not surprised that you don't have much energy because you are not eating nearly enough. You are on the right track, I can see that you are really serious. This was a really hard concept for me too, so I'm absolutely not criticizing you. When you take in very little food your body goes into suvival mode because it thinks there is a food shortage, it starts to store everything it can get. What you have to do instead of starving is feed your body, when it is convinced that the food shortage is over, it will start letting go of the weight. I hope that makes sense because this is important for you to be successful.
What follows is basically my menu. I'm not including recipes but you will get the idea. All of the foods come from the Grocery List for bodybuilders which you will find stickied at the top of the Nutrition board. Those foods are considered to have clean calories so when you choose only the foods from that list, you are eating clean. It's not just for people gaining muscle, it's for everybody. Breakfast 4 egg whites 1/4 c green pepper 1/4 c onion 1/4 c shredded low fat cheddar cheese Saute the veggies in a teaspoon or so of olive oil. Olive oil is good for you so don't be afraid to use it. When the veggies are done, add your egg whites and cheese. 1/2 c cooked oatmeal with splenda coffee w/ splenda and non-fat half & half 2 hours later Snack 1/2 c 2% cottage cheese 3 oz water pack tuna (1/2 can) 2 hours later Lunch 4oz ground turkey patty 2 c chopped broccoli 1 c yam cubes, baked topped with 1 tsp low fat margarine and sprinkled with cinnamon 2 hours later Snack 2 c mixed salad greens 1/4 c green pepper 1/4 c onion 1/4 c mushrooms 6 black olives sliced 2 tsp fat free ranch dressing 3 oz water packed tuna (other 1/2 of can) 2 hours later Dinner 6 oz chicken breast sprinkled with 1 tsp taco seasoning and topped with 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 cup shredded low fat cheddar cheese. Bake in 300 degree oven until done. 1 c green beans mixed with 1/2 cup mushroom slices and 1/4 cup onion 1/2 c cooked brown rice (I cook mine using fat free chicken broth) 2 hours later Bedtime Snack 1 c 2% cottage cheese 1/2 c sugar free, fat free jello I mix these together, it's pretty good. What I want you to see from this is how much I eat. I'm 5'3" and I don't lift weights although I want to. I weighed 148lbs at the beginning of last week and this morning I weigh 144. Yes, I'm sure that some, if not all of it is water but I'll keep you posted as I go along if you like. I hope this helps you and that you feel better soon. -------------- Anni ******* Quoting Michael: Your future is beckoning, pay attention to the call. |

denovas no wonder....you're eating almost nothing....
I eat more for breakfast alone... eventhough you want to lose a lot of weight....it will take time...most likely a year.... you should lose maybe a pound a week ..so don't cut calories drastically....100-300 is good...500 max....otherwise as anni pointed out you'll go into starvation mode.... focus on including a protein source with every meal...that measn for lunch with veggies I would add tuna/chicken/turkey...etc.....also add beans for fiber and lots of protein....pinto,kidney, black, lima...go well with rice...and create a complete vegetarian protein source...breakfast should be a fairly large meal.... or with your 3 eggs ...eat a 1-2 yams....and add some other vegetables....complex carbs help fill you up and keep your insulin levels from spiking....sweet potatoes, yams, oatmeal, brown rice....potatoes, rice, and other sources are better to eat throughout the day...imo

Thanks everyone. I had increased my food intack, but I will try and add even more. I honestly feel uncomfortable eating that amount of food is this something that I should just strive to work up to? I can't stomach eggs before noon, so I will have to modify some of the recommendations.
I am not must of a meat eater, though not vegetarian. I am going to search on this site for some alt. to all of the meat. Again, thanks!! |

Denovas you've been given some profoundly good advice here. If you aren't going to listen to it then you probably won't get the results that you want. I think you will find that the people who are the most successful with reaching their goals are the people who work the hardest at it.
In the end, the question isn't whether or not you like eggs before noon, or eating meat, or eating more in general. In the end the question is, do you enjoy being overweight and are you willing to do what it takes to stop it. -------------- Anni ******* Quoting Michael: Your future is beckoning, pay attention to the call. |

Denovas, if you keep up with the workouts, your appetite will increase. You can help it along by eating small amounts throughout the day. Two of your listed meals are water or tea!!. Divide your calorie needs into 6 meals and eat somthing at each one. There are healthy meal replacements and protein shakes that can equal a small meal. Also know that you can't go from 1200 calories a day to 2500 in just a few days. Make it managable and increase your total calories per day by 250 for two weeks. Then bump it up again. Hope this helps.-------------- Dances with humans Charlie

not much of meat eater?
fine substitute....but know this proteins come in different quality in terms of digestability... eggs rate very high...so does whey protein red meat/chicken/turkey/tuna all rate fairly high also vegetarian sources are of poorer quality and all except soy are incomplete sources...meaning they don't have all essential amino acids(BCAAs)... so you might want to start eating soy, or mix variety of beans with (brown)rice(kidney, lima, black, pinto,etc)....lentils, etc...+lots and lots of fiber Eat nuts (walnuts, almonds, peanuts, etc) all have high protein you can eat different variety of cheeses, milk products, yogurt, there's plenty of things to eat.... But sometimes it comes down to just sucking it up and eating certain foods you're no that fond of....good nutrition is hard work at least initially until you get into routine....gl

As I stated previous, I am very appreciative of all of the advice that everyone has given me here, and I AM incorporating as much of it as possible.
charlie826- you really answered my concern about jumping up to almost double what I am currently taking in, in just one day. I suppose I didn’t articulate my response properly- it is not that I don't LIKE eggs, I just get sick if I eat them in the morning, I don't know why. I don't however, see the utility of eating something and then chucking it back up- hence previous comment. menace3000- Thanks for that list of protein sources. I will update everyone on how things are going. |

Given all of the advice, I would like to resubmit that you still should go see the doctor. Given the level of fatigue that you are reporting and the sudden jump in weight, there could be other problems as well.
