Hi there,
I have read just about everything on these boards over the last few days and have found answers to most of my questions. What I really need is advice so that I know if I'm spending my time (and sweat) wisely. I joined a gym January 1st and other than firming everything up the only other change has been gaining 3 pounds. I feel like the guy in the commercial than runs around the gym once weighs himself and it hasn't changed so he smacks the scale. Anyways, here is what I have been doing. Sundays: 1 1/2 hour spinning class. Mondays: 30 min treadmill - weights 45 minutes Tuesdays: 1 hour spinning class Wed.: 30 min treadmill - weights 45 min. Thurs.: 1 hour spinning class Friday: 30 min. treadmill - weights 45 min. Saturday: Have to clean house sometime! The spinning is new, just started last week. Was doing 45 min on treadmill but got bored with routine so changed to spinning. I'm not good at dieting but have cut way down on sweets and have worked on portion control. I am eating much less than I was before but am definitely not starving myself. Would appreciate advice on what I'm doing wrong or right. Thank you! |

Don't worry about the 3 pounds. That gain is muscle from the weights and spinning.
MAke sure you are consuming the right amount of calories for your body weight, and don't go below 12cal per pound. Eat 5 x a day. 3 meals and 2 quality snacks (they can count as a meal) and be patient. Good luck and congratulations on joining the healthy lifestyle. -------------- Still trying to find out how to do the Hollywood Free Press. Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

Thanks for your input. Other than my diet does everything else look okay?

Nicolesmom, remember your rest!!!. Muscle doesn't grow in the gym. It grows during rest. Your workout is fine if you can do it. Do a search here for overtraining and pay attention to how you feel. Also separate your cardio and weights by 6 hours or better yet do them on opposing days.-------------- Dances with humans Charlie | |

Thanks Charlie, I'll keep that in mind. Just kind of figured more would be better.

More isn't always better in exercise.
Quality and rest is important. Thanks for posting Charlie. -------------- Still trying to find out how to do the Hollywood Free Press. Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

Maybe I'm out of line here, seeing as how I'm pretty new to lifting (on my third week of an ft plan), but I noticed you put "weights, 45min". I follow my ft plan pretty much to the T, and it hardly ever takes me even a 1/2 hour. I know we don't all have to have the same plan in the gym, but in my first 3 weeks of following the freetrainers plan, I've noticed some definite changes in the definition of my body, especially in my arms and thighs, and even more especially my triceps.
nicolesmom, I don't know what you do in your 45 mins. on the weights (maybe your routine is even better than mine) but I know that I don't spend that long on weight training, and I'm already 10 pounds lighter than I was when I started the plan, and I FEEL about 20 times better about going to the gym. Like it's been said numerous times on these boards, muscle burns fat! I would concentrate on a full-body lifting routine, and do your cardio after your weight training (works for me anyways). Like I said, maybe I'm out of line, trying to spout off like I know all there is to know about working out, but it has been an awakening for me!:) I also don't want to step on anyone's toes with contradictory information. Take my words for what they are worth. I'm definitely not an expert. Also, to answer your question about spending your time (and sweat) wisely: YES! you are. You are working out, and that's more than a lot of people can say. Keep it up and GOOD LUCK! Thanks for reading my post.:) |

Thanks for responding Mark. I'm up for advice from anyone expert or not. It sounds like you have had great results so you obviously are doing something right! I have started doing my cardio after weights so will see what happens. I have noticed changes, less jiggle and a general toning all over, just wish my clothes would get a little looser. Good luck to you and thanks again.:)

Nice going Mark. Be pateint. What we are trying to reverse here didn't show up a month ago. It took years to get whatever way we are. Give it time and you will see results.
Hope I didn't make anyone cry! -------------- Scales are for dead weight: We are not dead yet! Still trying to find out how to do the Hollywood Free Press. Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |
