good fats are the ones known as unsaturated and monosaturated which are actually good fats..
these are found in olive oil, fish, nuts.

saturated fats are not so good...those are found in red meat, diary foods (butter and cheese for example), shortenings ect

to avoid excess fat you need to minimize fast food which has a lot of it...

In our society, we eat too many fats (obviously). The fats that we eat most often are omega-6 fatty acids. We need more omega-3 fatty acids in our diets. Omega-3's can be found in coldwater fish and flaxseed oil, just to name 2. These are the ones responsible for hormone production and can actually help burn off the fat you already have. When you eat, you should keep your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio at about 4:1, meaning for every 4 grams of omega-6 fatty acids you ingest, you should have at least one gram of omega-3. The ratio of a typical American diet is about 10:1. Avoid saturated fats at all costs (NO fast food), and use extra virgin olive oil when cooking. Almonds are an EXCELLENT source of fat, as well as most other nuts. All in all, avoid the saturated stuff.
