The true definition of a machine is a device that changes the amount of force exerted or the direction in which force is exerted. In the case of flat bench presses, the machine is changing (reducing) the amount of force you are applying per rep. When you workout with freeweights, its just you vs. gravity.

Because when using the flat bench with a bar or drumbells you use other muscles as well and not only the chest and triceps. When working on a machine you have a guided movement, so you'll never have to think of stabilize the barbell. You are simply just pushing. But on the bench with a free weight flying over your head, you have to control that weight a lot more than when it's the machine doing the job.
