I have never eaten/taken/ingested flax seed oil. How is this typically done, and how should I work it into my current diet?

Liquid form, one tablespoon once per day before bedtime. It doesn't taste bad and its great for your diet.

Flaxseed oil is very high in Omega 3's. For this is the main reason we use it. Most of our diets are much higher in Omega 6 than 3, and this is backwards. We get plenty of Omega 6. Try to strive for a 3:1 ration of Omega 3:6. Take as many tbsp. as needed to meet your fat macros of your diet. Usually late afternoon to evening is best for fats, they are better metabolized and will not effect blood sugars, thus no impact on insulin. Subbing fats for carbs later in the day as thus mentioned can be very beneficial if trying to shed fat. Any way it goes, as athlets, you want to acquire the above mentioned ratio of Omega's. Flaxseed caps are fine, but you will get more bang for the buck with the oil. One tbsp. is typically 10 gr. of fat, while you would have to take 10 capsules, so they are not as cost effective.

Thanks BB1fit,

I actually found out about the capsules myself with a little research. So one tbsp. has approx. 90 calories?

If I remove 180 calories in late day carbs, I could stick in two tbsp.s of flaxseed oil. Maybe 1 at about 5:00 and another at 9:30? Would this work? Thanks again.

Sounds like a plan, especially so if you are cutting. Regardless, fit your EFA's into your fat macro amount.

Sorry BB1fit,

you got slightly ahead of me. Is my fat macro amount my recommended daily fat intake?

I have heard Flax oil is not that effective. Try Flax meal. It is not expensive and you can put into cereal or a shake. Ground flax seeds are best, if you can use a coffee grinder.

2 tbsp. flax meal conatain 2.25 gr. of Omega 3
1 tbsp. of flax oil contains 6.9 gr. of Omega 3
The oil does not of course contain the fiber, but it retains the lignans and is more concentrated for the EFA's.

The main reason we take flax is to get Omega 3's. It is difficult at best to eat that much fish, etc. So flax oil is much more efficient in this regard. Most folks need around 30 gr. of fat or more each day. This becomes more difficult with flax meal too. It is a good idea to use both. Flax meal can be a great asset when you need to slow digestion due to the fiber/fat content, so using with your whey protein such as at night is ideal.
