most wil say dbs....because it is easier, and safer, if you don't have a power rack. oth have good and bad things.
With a barbell I can do 85% of my max bench(280) 5 times.....with dbs i can usually only do about 90-100s with dbs.........however the dbs make you control it more, and one side doesn't help out the other as much........both are good though

Floor Barbell Presses are better if you choose to do heavy weight...
However if you choose Dbs...try to do DB Flyes(instead of presses)...better ROM imo...

I like to alternate between them. I like them both equally. DB's give you more of the stability work than the barbell but the barbell gives you more strength work because like menace said you can go heavier.

Id pay attention and listen to gator. He made an excellent point about alternating. If you continually alternate your excericises, it becomes very hard to hit a plateau. I have always used dumbbells more often because first and foremost I am a wrestler, and need the stability strength, after all, i dont press a straight bar off my chest in wrestling. However, as far as powerlifting goes, the barbell is probably what you want to use more often. Just make sure not to get stuck on one thing.
-------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor.

That stability will help you control a heavier weight later on.
