I just started using my free weights again after a 9 month absence. I was using a power-tec multi station workbench during that time. The machine workouts were productive, but when i got back under that power rack with free weights...ohh man. I wasnt as strong, didnt have the lung capacity during squats, balance was off etc. If you want size leave the machines alone. They have their place, but when your not using stabilizer muscles(like when you use machines),your not going to tax your nervous system as much. Hence, slower development. My opinion; machines are safer(if you dont have a spotter), are in high demand because they make all the exercises easier. But Free weights are the "Real deal". Free weights make the workout much more difficult, and will make you bigger and stronger faster. That just my 2 cents based on my own personal experience.

Yes free weights are great they have disadvatages too........lots of people I see work out use momemtum instead of pressing weights. Think about it how many people you see bounce the bar off their chest, arch their back...very bad not from a from stand point, but muscle wise too, your losing all the benifits of free weights.
Machines on the other hand are safer, but to be safer the range of motion is cut off a lil bit. Ex. On the bench press it stops about 2 or 3 in above your chest, it don't go all the way down.
As for the spotter thing...... I have never had a spotter when I work out, People with spotter seem to misuse the spots, they do 2 reps and make the spot lift the other 4 or 5 .......thats not a work out... for th espot maybe, getting a good curl or up right row lol.
Added my 2 cets to make it 4 cents now

Yes, many folks find this out when they switch from a strictly machine to freeweight workout. Machines keep "form" for you, so your stabilizers are not used. Thus when doing feeweights for the first time, balance is off and you cannot near the weight you were doing with the stacks. They do have their place though, and it is good to do blend of both. With machines, they can help to keep perfect form on some exercises you will have a tendency to "cheat" on with free weights. So, make the basis of your workout freeweights, but use both and it will be very productive.
