ARRRGGGHHH....the body is so stubborn and damn hard to get it to what you want it to be like! a little while ago the cardio i was doing with a combination of weights was starting to show my abs, then i stopped cardio with aims of gaining mass...not only did i not gain any mass, but i started losing the abs and gained back the fat i lost...i tried to change the diet for mass gain, and im assuming i did not do it properly, and its hard to do so with school. So now, unsuccessful with mass gaining im trying to define and cut the body untill summertime, maybe then i will have time on the calendar to do a strict mass routine. The definition is slowly on its way and god knows when the damn abs will want to start showing, they have started to show... sometimes its very discouraging to see yourself trying so hard and it just doesnt seem to be working! heck, i was as big as my friend a couple months ago, i train better than he does, and yet his arms are now about 2 inches bigger than mine! and he fills his diet with McDonalds and chocolate and only eats about 2-3 times a day and he still has the abs and etc. Im not going to give up yet, but im surely gettin very discouraged.
All those people who are big and defined to the core, appreciate every bit of it!

Oh yes the human body is complicated...... BUT that's why you need to start listening to your body to find out what will work for you!!! Try small things and see how your body will react (and patience!!).

What I can suggest is you following a low carb, high protein and high (good!) fat diet for a couple of weeks.
Maybe that will give you your abs back and you'll keep the muscles........

It all has to do with genetics. Some people are just blessed with the ability to do very little and have great results. Most of us (myself included) have to really bust our butts to get what we want and achieve our goals.

In order to really give you an information, I would need to know more about how your body works. I'm one of those who has a very hard time gaining mass, but will lose weight very very quickly. In order for me to gain any kind of mass, muscle included, I must eat ALOT. And not just protein, I have to take in alot of everything, calories, carbs, protein, fat, the whole 9. In my opinion, if you want to gain mass and also get cut, gaining the mass first would be the best way to go. Make sure your diet is in check, and lift heavy to put on mass. Then switch your diet to a weight loss one, but make sure you don't change it so drastically that you lose your muscle. As for the abs, if you want them to really show you have to add resistance to them. I think that adding weight, but not too much, is the best way to go. Do them til they burn and you can't do'em anymore.

It cracks me up how you referred to 'the body' as if you were working on someone else! HAHAHA!
I have a piece of advice. Pick up the Testosterone Advantage Plan from menshealth.com. That's an excellent starter. I walks you through calculations and has meal plans and a nine week workout. It will give you a GREAT base to build on.

You stopped the cardio. There you go. In my opinion, if you're running or whatever a few times a week, then suddenly stop, that would bring about a big change in the amount of calories you're burning. I know that if I'm not doing cardio, I go nowhere. How lean were you when you quit? If you need to trim up a little, doing so would help you look more defined. Also, even if you're not doing cardio for fat loss, a little is still going to be beneficial to your heart and lungs. Those are more important to your overall health than biceps. By the way, I have several friends that used to eat whatever they wanted still look fantastic. They got a little older, metabolism changed--they're now overweight. Your healthy lifestyle will take you farther in the long run.
