Howdy all.
Just wondering how to do this best.
I recently started the ft exercise program here, and so far so good. But, I've also been using a personal trainer at my gym for a couple months now. I only see him 2 times a month (all I can afford right now).
I'm not sure how to integrate the two. Do I do the exercises in my program, or just skip them (will that mess up the system if I don't put in values for one day)? Do I work the specified muscle group with my trainer, or do something different? Do I make sure to go to my trainer on an "off" day, or is that going to be too much (already at 5 days per week)?
Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Talk to your trainer about what you can do. If he is writing you a routine, then do that. However, if you are only working with him on certain days and training certain muscle groups, than see if you can have him go through all the exercises on the FT routine with you.

I think it would be worth going thru the FT routine with your trainer as well, that way he can check your form and help you determine the appropriate wt to use. Since your only using the PT 2X per month, I wouldn't worry about it too much, and if necessary, just swap out your FT day for your trainer day, and then get back to the FT program.

thanks! He doesn't write a routine for me. But he definitely helps push me more than I can by myself.
I didn't think about having him check my form. That's a great idea!

A cheaper alternative is loud music or a workout partner.

I agree with wrestler. Your PT knows what is "generally" good. But, no workout plan is for everyone. He is going to be trying to find out what works for you just like anyone working out on their own would be doing. Find you a workout buddy and learn together. Heck, the competition might drive you to better gains than any trainer night lead to!!!

It seems like my PT doesn't really try to change up the program based on what my goals and needs are. But maybe that is just me being a newbie?
He has me doing a fairly sizable weight, doing 12-15 reps (usually), moving quickly from machine to machine, with only little breaks between sets.
This may be fairly normal, but a "substitute" PT I had once when my own was sick, had me do more endurance types of things with little or no weight, just to get me going. And the burn lasted pretty long on that day. But then, maybe I'm in better shape now too.
I'm not sure how much training or certification this group of trainers at my gym have, so it is hard to know what to listen to of what he says or has me do. At least he is pretty strong and toned, so I know whatever he is doing is working for him.
