Hi everyone, Ok I'm about in tears now..... I weighed myself this morning and in the past 5 weeks I have gained 3 1/2 pounds. My first mistake was when I started my program, I didn't measure my self so I don't know if Iv lost inches, which gets me to my question.... How do I know if I have gained fat or Muscle? Oh and my nutrition isn't the best but I keep trying. Can anyone help me?????

Paula, the only sure fire way to tell is to get bf% checked. My wife and I bought a set of calipers and they are relatively cheap. You can also get it done at most gyms or fitness supply places. You will feel more positive if you quit weighing and start measuring. You have almost certainly put on muscle which is heavier than fat. Read my profile, I added an 8 month update which pertains to your question.

Good luck

How do your clothes fit? What have other people said regarding the way you look? How do you feel physically? more energy? More stamina? How do you feel mentally? Several benchmarks there. Follow Charlie's advice or go out today and buy you a camera and take some snapshots. Use these pictures for a comparison in a few weeks. Seeing is believing. Unless you are trying to gain weight, weigh no more than every 3-4 weeks, if at all.

Ok guys I will take you advice and stop weighting so much, I just got into the habit of doing it when I was loosing weight. As for my clothes Im not sure I wear loose fitting cloths most of the time I can't really tell. But my neighbor said yesterday that my arms are looking bigger with definition too, but I asked my hubby about if I looked like I gained weight and he said he thought it looked like I did. Then I get up this morning and weighed and there I was 3 pounds heaveier then when I started my program. Now physically I feel GREAT! More energy, more stamina and mentally I feel like I can take on the world. So I need to stay off the scale then. Charlie congratulations on all of your achievements you have made. ^5 to you buddy!

Ive been doing the Body For life workout routines and diet for 6 weeks now and as far as scale weight, Ive noticed only minimal changes. Like 6 lbs or so in 6 weeks. This would really bother me if i hadnt noticed anything else.

But what Ive noticed is my arms are getting slightly moer defined, ive lost some fat off my back, i feel lighter, i feel alot stronger (im gaining alot of muscle), my strength has greatly increased. And ive been able to fit into jeans that i used to have to lay on the bed to button, and even then they were super tight.

So dont just pay attention to the scale. IF you do not wish to get your bodyfat measured, then watch for all the other great benefits that come with getting in shape, such as the above mentioned. Your quality of life will skyrocket indeed.

Just a side note on somethin that might make u feel a little bit better about what your husband said...

If you are gaining muscle, and you do not lose the fat on your body, you will look bigger. That muscle you just added has to go somewhere doesnt it? So dont feel bad if your hubby tells you that you are looking like you are adding weight.
It could very well be muscle you have added, and have not lost fat, or you are gaining muscle faster than you are losing fat, which is definitely possible. I would then look at your diet.

Have your husband contact me. The only response when a woman asks if she looks heavier is a rapid unequivocal resounding "NO DEAR, YOU LOOK GREAT or HELL NO, YOU LOOK GREAT or NOT ONE BIT , YOU LOOK GREAT> It works like that. I can help him. Use some of that energy in a marital way and he won't care.LOL

LOL Charlie.... But I asked and I really can handle the truth. Don't get me wrong it still is hurtful but none the less it's the truth.
FireHawk.... my diet is terrible! I am trying very hard to get it in line but I think that the diet part is going to be my toughest competitor. But I won't give up!
Thanks again guys : )

FWIW, I check my BF% at the gym at the beginning of each month. Two months ago, I was down 11 pounds on the scale...5 pounds fat and 6 pounds lean mass! This told me I needed to adjust my diet. Last month, I gained 6 pounds on the scale...However, I gained 8 pounds in lean mass and dropped two pounds of fat. Much better.

For most it seems, the diet is usually the hardest part of a complete workout and dieting routine so dont feel bad. Since you are female, you probably wont be gaining a ton of muscle anyway unless you are genetically gifted :P

So it wont make you look that much bigger. But dieting and cardio primarily are what remove that fat off of you. Resistnace training is very important to mix in to keep that muscle mass intact so that as you are active you can burn more calories.
