Another question for you guys. First off, I am truly inspired by all of you rdedication to this sport. So much so that tommorrow I begin on a new journey in my life. I am really going to turn things around this time. Anyway, I am left pondering something. I have not been blessed with the best genetics. I have always had really flabby arms and love handles. Sometimes less flab and smaller love handles, but they were always present. I have dieted and worked out alot and still did not have awesome definition in my arms. How much does genetics play a role in your success? I am not trying to look like the guys on the mag's, but it sure would be nice. Is it possible, through good eating, working out, and persistence to overcome ones shortcomings in genetic makeup? Just curious. Thanks again.

Being honest, we all are limited somewhat by our genetics. That being said, can we push them to the limit? Certainly so, you used a great word your self...consistency. Consistency in all aspects, training and diet. Some that are blessed with superior genetics, can train little, eat not quite so good, and still look good. Others, myself being one of them, have to pay particular attention to all details. The old saying is true, throw enough sh*t against the wall, and some of it is bound to stick. Put blinders on, forget what all the "experts" you know say, and go for it. You will have the last say! When things seem like they are not working, and you are wanting to throw in the towel, this is in fact the time you must push even harder. When you are satisfied or stop, this is as far as you will ever go.

Genetics is just a obstacle, not a limitation

Remember you have the greatest genetic advantage there is - a Y chromosome!

Seriously though, I believe the greatest obstacle most of us have is self doubt. What this really means is that with dedication and positivity, we are capable of truly amazing things.

I think the first step is to set yourself very specific goals and work towards them. This website is fantastic for advice and encouragement when a plateau or dip in motivation is reached.

You do sound like you have the right attitude, and I look forward to seeing your progress. :)

I have taken all that you have said to heart. Thanks for the encouragement. I started today with my new look on life. It was great to be back in the gym. It is amazing how much stamina you lose when you take time off from lifting. Not discouraged though, I know that I am still the same person and will soon be lifting the same weights and more. Thanks again.

Thanks Charlie. Don't worry about me asking questions, as I tend to always seek advice. I also have a short memory, so I will sometimes ask the same question twice. LOL! I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror this afternoon at the gym for cardio session two, what a site. I was amazed at how quick a persons body can go to hell. I stuck with a fairly good diet for the second day, feeling good. Sore as hell, but that is the price for perfection. Gonna make it this time. Thanks for all the kind words.
Kakaroto, I sure will give you one more. Thanks for your help.

No one has "bad" genetics. You just have to learn what you can and can't expect within reasons.

I'm very large framed, with large bones. I highly doubt i'll ever be a ronnie coleman, or arnold. But that doesn't mean to stop. Hey, I say i'd i'm gonna be built big, then by golly i'm gonna be BIG. Just cause you don't have a 6 pack, or a 32 in waist doesn't mean your not healthy.

Stick with it, and work WITH your genetics!

good luck

I nuked my laptop at home with a cup of icewater. I can only post at work and my a$$hole boss has been making me work. The nerve.... I had my wife take a temp job to get me a new laptop. She's almost saved enough money. I'm going looking today and I'll tap her wallet soon and be back!!
