One of the claims of L-Glutamine's effect also happens to be a good GH(growth hormone) releaser. I think the effective dose for this is higher though, about 10 grms.

If your capsule is powder, which I have used, you can simply open them up and dump them in a drink. But you need at least 10 grams to get the gh effects of it I believe regardless. I know 16 caps may sound like alot, but if you don't get the effects you should with only 4, are you really saving money? You may want to invest in the pharmeucetical grade powder L-Glutamine next time. That way a couple teaspoons, and you have it.

I've tried l-glutamine capsules. I recommend the grade powder. You can pick one up at GNC. Hefty price tag of 74.99 retail for a 2 pound tub but goes a long way. I tend to find myself regurgitate after taking so many capsules, especially 10 grams worth!

xphobicas...I may be mistaken about the dosage, though I do know that 5 grams is usually the minimum dosage. I take 10 gr. before training, and 15 gr. post training. I do also know you can get it for much less than 75.00. Prolab for example I believe is only 29.99 for a good supply. Don'
Bodybuilders should take 10 to 15 grams of L-Glutamine a day - supplementing it 2 to
3 times daily, with each serving at around 5 grams. You should also know that you
may already be getting some L-Glutamine in your diet from other supplements you're
taking. Many protein supplements already have some L-Glutamine mixed into it, so
read the labels to know for sure. Best times to take L-Glutamine powder is in the
morning, after a workout, and at night before bed time.

ageis, you're getting ripped off if you're paying $75 (US?) for 2pounds of glutamine. It's usually around $50 for 1kg (2.2 pounds) if you order online.

i read in an article (clinical studies) that taking glutamine from a range of 5 to 21 grams a day does not report any side effects. Depending on your training intensity, researchers recommend 8 - 20 grams of glutamine a day. However, some builders and fountain of youth seekers take these amino acids in dangerous quantities. To much glutamine acts as a neurotoxin.

At best, your body can absorb only so much glutamine and the surplus becomes a high dollar urine. At worst, serious over indulgence can lead (rarely) to seizures and coma.

Take the powder form as it will save you more money.

Great topic. Okay, here I go:
First of all $75 for 2 lbs of glutamine?! You are getting ripped off. Just a word of advice, but GNC's prices are often nearly twice of online retailers. Check www.netrition.com or www.dpsnutrition.com for far better prices. Like ageis said, you can get 1 kg for about $50.
Second, I've read some conflicting articles on glutamine. Most of the studies done on glutamine have involved subjects that have had experienced major physical stresses (such as surgery, critical illness or fasting - which are far more stressful to the body than weight training) much like high protein diets have mainly been tested on people that already have some degree of renal failure. In those subjects, glutamine did assist in the slowing of catabolism and assist in increasing protein synthesis. However, people in those conditions have very poor protein synthesis and very high catabolism. Under most conditions, the addition of glutamine doesn't present a great benefit, however. There is evidence showing that glutamine boosts hGH (growth hormone) but then again, so does smashing your toes with a hammer. These growth hormone levels, though are evenescent, and short boosts won't do you much good (I don't want people posting here later that they started smashing toes, yet they aren't growing!). This is why most hGH supplement products don't work.
Glutamine supposedly does wonders for your immune and gastrointestinal systems, but as a body building supplement, many new studies still have its importance up in the air.
That being said, I take the stuff, but I bought it well before reading any of this new information. I'm going to continue to read up on it so I can decide once and for all whether to shell out another $50 for a second can.
