Carb diet to lose weight?? hhhhmmmmm...not a very good way. Why not try a higher protein diet,(lean proteins), with useful carbs. Proteins have a very thermic effect in that they take energy to digest. The type of carbs you want that will actually be useful to your body, and even help burn fat. The first category you want to eat from with carbs is fibrous type. These can actually help you burn fat. All the green vegetables, salads, etc. Sweet potatoes and brown rice are good. In fruits, strawberries, blueberries are excellent. Throw in some good healthy fats, a couple tbsp. of flax oil, even salmon(which is also in the good protein group), great source of Omega fatty acids. A high carbohydrate diet is what got most people in trouble in the first place.

confused, according to any dietian it is better to pick from the grains, fruits and veggies. I mean I am not knocking protien by all means(its essential in gettin big, yeah baby! :) ) but how are you suppose to have the energy if you don't have the proper complex carbs to fuel yah?

Think of it this way.
The body uses carbohydrates first to fuel your energy. If your carb source is just right then you stay at the same weight/bf. If the carbs are too high you start gaining fat. When the body has a deficit of carbs that is when it starts tapping into your fat and muscle for energy. To keep your muscle from wasting that is why it is recommended you offset it with protein to help at least maintain.

Hope this helps.

:) Melissa

Great line Melissa...Here is a fact...ir you consume carbs in such a high amount(what, 60%?), you are most likely overfeeding your body when your glycogen stores are already full, and the excess carbs will be turned into triacylglycerois and then carried into adipocytes. In other words, it will turn into ugly fat! This macronutrient state(low protein)won't lead to optimal fat loss. Don't confuse weight loss with fat loss.

I don't think bb1 was by any means advocating a protein ONLY diet - just that protein be a bigger factor.

That is exactly right mackfactor. You see, by what I mentioned in my last post, it is even worse case if this diet is for a friend who is sedentary.(doesn't exercise much). Because he/she's glycogen stores will almost always be full, the carbs will always spill over. The biggest secret that people do not think of is the glycemic index. The term complex and simple is not enough. The glycemic index is how a carb will have an impact on your blood sugar. This is one place also protein can play a huge role. Combining high glycemic carbs with some quality lean protein will essentially lower the GI rating, thus blunting the insulin response. In case you weren't aware, insulin is the most anabolic hormone in the body, and also your "storage" mechanism. Eating too many grains,I think bread, cereal, rice and pasta make up the base of the pyramid, so if eaten in excess, and only 2 to 3 servings I believe of protein, you may begin to see the danger here. Hope this helps some.

Thats right BB1. hehe I know from gettin this gut. Its amazing how if you really stop and look at your horrible eating style, all the floury stuff you actually eat. (For people not payin attention to nutrition).

If you believe in God, and him creating the earth, look at it this way: What did he provide for us to have food? He provided animals (protein meat), Fruit (carbs) Veggies(Vitality, carb/protein perfection).

Nature is perfect without man interfering with it. Always think back to simplistics. I know some of u are rollin your eyes (oh whats he sayin Jesus freak lol) and thats fine, but nature is perfect if you think about it. It regenerates on its own. It provides everything that everyting on the earth needs to live and live healthy.

This brought to you by Me. heh

Even if you take the 'Jesus freak' out of your message, Firehawk, you're right. Nature provides us with everything we need. That's why it's generally smarter to eat 'whole' foods, foods as nature created them. These are the things that our bodies were designed to best utilize. Fruits, veggies and meat are all provided as sustenance with no processing necessary. These foods are also by for the best for you.

Oh, let me add on the original topic:

For gaining muscle mass, you want to have a higher carb intake, to focus on losing fat, you want your carb intake lower. As bb1 detailed, carbs are muscle fuel. If you're focused on gaining mass, you need to have them. This is why ketogenic diets are not recommended for people who are resistance training. While the two may be done at the same time, you will see minimal if any gains in muscle mass under those conditions.
