I started working out about a month ago. When I started I had a flat stomach and no love handles. My eating habits have not changed but I am in the gym 5 days a week and have been working on my abs to get that 6-pack. In that time my stomach now looks like I have a beer gut and I now have love handles. Any idea why and how can I make it go away?

this is just a thought, and it might be wrong, but it seems that if you are working your ab muscles, but your body fat hasn't dropped, that the muscles you are building would push the fat to the surface and make it look like your tummy is getting bigger or disproportioned. Like I said, I dunno, just a thought, someone correct me if i am wrong.

your right......thsi is mostly why big powerlifters, and NFL lineman have huge guts but you can punch or kick them its like hiting a wall lol think about it this way.....u have 3 in of fat on your stomache that sticks out and you add 1 in of muscle under it.............now it will push the fat out another 1 in so its now 4in.............gotta get rid of the body fat, abbs are built in the kitchen, eat well and do plenty of cardio

Keep working. Cristalbelle and Andrew are exactly right. As your body fat decreases it will go down. Just takes time, diet and work.

Keep doing the cardio and the ab routine as they will work together in the fight against flab. Also, look at your diet and clean it up if possible with cutting out bad fats and adding fruits and veggies, and don't forget, before during and after EVERYTHING DRINK WATER!!

As you said...your diet hasn't changed. Perhaps now you should change your diet. Adding muscle but not removing fat will lead to a bulkier look but not a leaner look. As much as most people hate to admit it you are what you eat. Fill your body with a good assortment of healthy foods and keep an eye on portions/calories. You can do crunches until blue in the face...but until the layer of fat is lost you wont see results from your hard work.

It's important NOT to drop your abs routine; you may even look incredibly ridiculous for a while as those abs push out under the fat (think Buddha here) but the fat will go, and when it's gone, what will you have to show?

It scared the bejeezles out of me when the same thing happened to me in 2002 when I started getting hardcore with abs training, but before I could say "What the Crikey?," my six pack emerged, and is still intact.

Best of luck.

Another thought, make sure you are pulling your abs IN and not pushing them out when you exercise. Not just ab work but anytime you are using your stabilizers, make sure to suck them in.

You answered your own question. Increase your lean protein intake, drop the processed and sugary carbs and replace with complex fibrous ones.

I understand that you want to loose the weight and thin out, but you can't rush things. Rome wasn't built in a day.
