hey just quick questions yesterday i did 12 solid hand stand pushups completly verticle and my body weight is at 156.2 pounds no my question is, i am using all my body weight on those i know i em if anything i might be 1 or 2 pounds off cuz of balance, yet im sure my cloths add another pound of weight on me so im doing about 156 pounds there for 12 reps.. now whta my question that i dont understand is how come i can do 12 solid reps easyier there and cant yet exactly do that as a barbell military press? is it cuz i got more hand grip on the floor eg if u did squats on ur toes or ur heels u wouldnt be able to do as much where by soling ur whole foot on the floor u can drive my force, would this be the question solution to why im doing my body weight with handstands but less iwth barbel as im only using my wrist and gripping barbel where as handstands i am using my whole hand to place on floor?? and if that was the case, if using a thicker barbeel make u press more weight up??:)

its simple if you think about it. With a hand stand push up, you can only go till your head touches the ground, where as in the military press it goes to your chest. Much greater range of motion. Also, its a little more stable than a MP.

I believe you would also use your chest and triceps more. It doesn't isolate the muscle groups as much as the military press.

Try doing them on 2 steps so you can effectivly go below the floor. I could do around 11 of the standard handstands, but only 3 or 4 with steps.
I believe the difference between the 2 is that they are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. Similar to a lat pull down and a chinup. Lat pull down will do little for your chinup strength. The difference is one you pull a bar to your body and the other you pull your body over a bar. I believe the recruitment order of the muscles involved is different therefore the carry over strength is limited. I think the handstand is also a tad easier because you lose the weight of your arms in the lift. I'm not 100% on that though. |

I agree with you to a point on the lat pull down. But, if I wanted to get an athlete to the point of perform a good pull-up on their own then I would most definitely use exercises that develop pull-up musculature. I would have them perform (not all at once) bent over rows, seated rows, pull-downs to the front, T-bar row, DB rows, etc...
I believe that strengthening the associated muscles will get a person do the point of doing pull-ups. Once they can do their body weight then we would do pull-ups all the time and use the other exercises as auxiliary movements to keep gettting better at pull-ups. |

I don't really know, I think the best thing to do is negative pullups. Lat pull and other lat exercises have limited carry over. It all helps a bit though.

think he's saying the lat pullup...much like the bench press(in other post)....has no sport uses in that plane of movement. -------------- " The only true eye, is your minds eye"- plato |

I'm saying the lat pull down being an open chain exercise and chin ups being a closed chain exercise have little strength carryover to each other. Meaning the best way to train pull up strength isn't to pull down.
