Hello everyone. I am new to weight training and bought some hand weights to supplement the home workout that I am doing. But, I was in a store yesterday and saw they had, what I call, a full size barbell with 100lb of weights for only 5 bucks more than what I paid for the set of hand weights. I am considering taking those hand weights back and getting the full size set, then maybe someday a bench, but my logic is that I can use the full size bar to do curls with both arms at once instead of the left - right - left curls with the hand weights. Also, then I would have something to use with a bench someday when I get one. Is this a good idea? I have enjoyed the hand weights but hate to think I am missing out on a good deal with the full size set for only 5 bucks more. Also, my goal is mainly to tone up and lose fat, not particularly body building per se.

You can get a decent workout with just dumbells, but sooner or later you're gonna need to have a heavier weight. DBs do add a bit of a stability challenge.

When you say hand weights, I assume you me dumbells (hand sized bar with weights on the ends? Can you adjust those weights or are they a set weight? Adjustability is what will give you the most versatility. A large barbell with adjustable weights is a good investment, but in my opinion, if I had to make a choice, I'd go for dumbells with ajustable weight. You get more range of motion, you can accomidate for weaknesses on one side, and you can do a wider variety of moves (tri kickbacks, single arm work etc) Just my humble opinion though....Hope that helps:)

Thanks for your help (both of you)!
The dumbells I have are up to 15lbs each adjustable. I gues I will stick with them. As you've both helped answer my question in regards to whether to go with dumbells or barbell... I feel the best choice now is to stick with the dumbells. Now, I just need to figure out if it is ok to do my workout today with the pain in my left arm or if it is ok to just do it tomorrow and take today as an extra rest day...

What do you do besides curls? It seems like that is the focus of your workouts.

I am doing the home training which was designed to do without weights, so its basically pushups, chinups, crunches, etc, but the curls were what I mainly got the weights for, as well as a couple other exercises which involve lifting the arms.
