Welcome, April! I just stumbled across this site & joined up, myself. I'm totally a newbie (again) at the whole fitness thing. I was also quite fit in HS (swimmer & recreational cyclist) and want to look that good again. Good luck to you!

There's good news for both of you, what you want is very doable. It's important to attack your goals from three different angles to have long term success.
DIET is number one. You have to change what and how you eat. No fad diets, no fasting. Just a commitment to eating healthier every day.
STRENGTH TRAINING will pay off in dividends. Make it a point to get a routine that lets you work each muscle group once a week. Strength training will help you maintain and improve lean muscle mass, which in turn will burn more calories. It'll help keep you looking and feeling healthy well into your later years.
CARDIO. Basically anything that gets you up and moving. This keeps your heart healthy and strong. It doesn't have to be hours on a treadmill or bike. Just something that gets your heart rate up over a period of time. (Power walking, jogging, swimming, climbing stairs, hiking.)
And remember, you don't have to go crazy. Too many people try to do too much at the beginning and get burned out. Ease yourself into a program that works for you, and once there continue to challenge yourself.
Oh, and always ask questions when you don't know!
