I'm a female and have been working out with weights since April of this year. All of a sudden for the past 2 weeks, everytime I workout I get a sharp pain in the left side of my head. It usually starts behind my left eye, but once it started in the back of my head, still on the left side. It's happened doing various exercies (hyperextensions, lunges, lying tricep extensions). My husband started working out the same time I did and has not had this happen to him. Any suggestions?

I know some people who can relate to your problem... but they get the headaches all the time and not just while working out (for those who do).. margarine is one case and requires medication prescribed by your doctor.
Stress is a common reason why you would get a headache, if you work or are busy all day then that might just be it. I do a lot of stuyding in college and it sometimes feels like my head is gona blow out.

I hope your eating all right... coz if your training with an empty stomach it might cause a headache as well

hope the pain eases off

I'm going to a neurologist this Friday. It might be migraines, but I don't know why after 8 months I would start getting them. In the past I've gone to work out WITH a headache (tension/stress) and working out seemed to get rid of it. Now, I go feeling fine and get one practically as soon as I start. I just did cardio tonight, no weights, and didn't get one. I was told not to work out until after I see what the doctor says. It sure is tempting to try one more time just to see if I get one one again!

I'm having a MRI/MRA done on the 31st. The MRA checks your arteries out. I've been doing mainly cardio, although last week after 1/2 hour of cardio, I did some leg work but only used machines and no free weights. Everything went okay. I'm taking it easy until I have the tests done.

Had to put the MRI/MRA off until I'm cleared from our insurance company. I've started doing 1/2 hr of cardio before using weights (suggested by the trainer at the fitness place we work out), and that seems to have helped. But, if the insurance company okays the test, I'm still going to have it done just as a precautionary messure.

1/2 hour of cardio is a lot to do BEFORE weight training. It's a lot better to do 10-15 mins of warm up to keep the energy for the weights, and then do 20-30 mins AFTER (this is also better for fat burning).

Anyway, if it helps avoiding your head aches.....

Philia2, you are correct, 1/2 hour cardio before weight training is alot. The trainer actually told me even 5 minutes would be enough. My husband tried to doing cardio first too, with me, but both of us felt we didn't have as much strength when doing the weights. He quit doing cardio first; I'm going to try your advise and only do 15 minutes and then the 20-30 afterwards. Thanks for the advise.

You are very much welcome trowray, hope everything will be okey for you.

I'm afraid to say that your trainer is wrong about his/her 5 mins of warm up. It's not enough for cardio vascular warm up, actually it has been shown that 12 mins is the best...... I say that it depends of the weather and each person. 10-15 mins is the best choice.

Glad you felt yourself that 30 mins were too long and taking your strength for the following weights. We, in here, can say things, but it's always best when people can feel it themselves.

Hi Trowray. I, too, get these sudden headaches. Here are the sites I found, although their credibility is somewhat questionable....

I have an MRI scheduled in two weeks, and my Ins.Co. willing, I will return and share the results, benign ones hopefully. Makes you think, dunnit? But it helps to know that you're not alone with this ;)

Well, I read that cherry juice helps with swelling, headaches, and some other minor injuries. It tastes nasty but it seems to work for me. Instead of taking pills I will drink about 6 oz of cherry juice.

Dear trowray,
I, recently, have the same problem with you, the pain starts in the back of my head then it goes to left and right side of my head and it goes to my left eyes.

It feels very bad, i feel that my head is going to blow up!
have you already found out the answer to this ? if you do
can you share with me, my email add is adamreza@telkom.co.id

I havent't seen a doctor because I'm afraid they will mistakenly diagnose the symptom. For the time being, I stop
doing exercise, even for a light one like push up, because
it can cause a great pain in my head. I'm looking forward
to your reply and thanks in advance.

I went to see a doctor this morning, and he said that I have vertigo, he sent me to do EKG, and the result says
my cardio is OK, does anyone knows about VERTIGO ?

I have stopped my workout since Monday, execpt doing sit-up, this one doesn't make my head ache.

I sometimes get the same headache as well. It only happenes to me when i do heavy weights especially shoulder press. It stays for couple hours and then eases off. I think its because of pulling the neck muscles.

aashik, have you seen your doctor about your headache ? did he say anything about it ? in my case, even for a light movement (ie push up) will cause a great pain in my head, but when i'm doing chrunces or sit up, nothings happened. The pain will come only if i work with my upper body. Any suggestion ?

I too get this, only after working out my chest. It seems to be putting to much stress on my neck muscles. I get a sharp pain in the back of my head. I eased up last time it happened but kept working out. It went away after awhile but I didnt get to workout as hard as I could. I am going to try the cranberry juice thing.
