The ft programs start with high reps., low weights. You work with low weights to get you warmed up. As the recommended number of reps. go down, the weights you use need to go up, ending up with as close to your max as possible.
Hope this helps...

also remember you cannot max out on every exercise. if you did you would not be able to finish the workout for that day.

If you started with heavier weights, you would be a perfect canidate for a major injury. If you do 4 sets of a particular excercise, you should do 10-12 reps your first set, 8 reps your second, 6 reps your third, and 3-4 reps your fourth. That's kind of an unwritten 'rule'. If you want to gear your routine toward a toning/definition goal, stick with high reps and lower weights. If you're lifting for mass, go heavy (check out the "Powerlifting" forum). Good luck!

Actually you can chock your body by doing the opposite thing once in a while...... The opposite of pyramidal training (I wouldn't do this with cables thou but with squat, bench presses, dead lifts....). The fact is to take the most heavy when having the most energy (lots of warm up before thou).
It's just another weight lifting technic.
Now dmk, keep with what the other guys have told you, start light and go more heavy.
Good luck.

I use to start with my max first back in high school. First though I did warm ups, push ups, and a few reps at 135. Then I went to 215 (max) did 1 and then went back to 135 and worked back up to 200. I did this mainly to see if my max had went up any. I even did some new things like starting with my max then down 20-30 lb. did some reps then down to 135 did some more reps then back to the mid weight and back to max. Diffrent people have diffrent ways of doing things. If you want to start with max I would say go for it, just make sure you are good and warmed up before you do. There really is no 100% sure fire way to a perfect workout so just try diffrent things till you find one that works.
