I recently developed some heel pain that can best be described as having been hit on the heel on the bottom of my left foot with a hammer. A friend described the symptoms as "plantar fasciitis." The pain is usually greater after sitting for a period of time and in the morning when getting out of bed. Movement seems to ease the pain. I cannot recall any specific injury to the heel. The pain is intermittent and on some days there is no pain at all. I don't think it is a heel spur but more related to the long ligament on the bottom of the foot. If anyone has had this ailment, I would appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks.

you do have plantar fasciitis!!!! I do too! YOu can learn to do wraps (with athletic tape). You really want to support your arch. For me it only occurs when I'm over my ideal weigh by 15 pounds or more. The key thing that you said that shows that it's P.F. is the morning pain. see a podietrist (wow I can't spell today). They told me I need to get orthotics. I know that it doesn't bother me when I'm at a healthy weight, so I'm not getting them, but still...

Jenn,
Thanks for your posting. I am not familiar with the athletic tape wraps. Today was a real rollercoaster of moments of pain and little or no pain. It amazes me how painful it can be after sitting for a prolonged period such as a 20 minute car ride. Ibuprofen does not seem to help. I have an annual physical scheduled next week so I'll start with my doctor and see what he says. Thanks again.

welcome :) if you ever want to complain about it, I'm here. None of my friends understand why my feet could interfere with working out!

During the past week, I tried to ease the pain with ibuprofen but it did not seem to do much good. Saturday, I switched to one Aleve twice a day and the pain has been reduced remarkably. I realize this is no cure but it has made walking much more pain-free. As an interesting side note, while I was finishing my workout on Saturday, a friend came in to start his workout. During the conversation, he commented that he had not been in the gym that week because of a "pain in his heel!" After comparing symptoms, we concluded we both were suffereing from "plantar fasciitis." More to follow. Lee

:) yeah the only way I can deal with it is stop exercising for a while... the recumbant bike is best since it isn't pressure on my feet. I only used to tape my feet when it was so bad I couldn't walk to class.

hi, just wondering how your heel is doing? i have self-diagnosed myself and i have that injury. what did ur doctor say and whats the treatment recommended? i know i developed this injury from running with old sneaks for a long time--no cushioning left for the soles. i havent' run in over a month but i still feel it especially after getting up in the morning...at least, for a few minutes.

i can't stand not running...any other equally effective cardio exercise u can recommend?

I have this in both feet too; sorry to hear I'm not alone ;) What my doctor told me to do was to cut out ANY exercise that forces the ligaments in the bottom of the foot to stretch; e.g. leg press (with toes only on the plate, for calf exercises), standing calf raises (on the down dip), or any exerces that basically brings your toes closer than a 90 degree angle towards your shins.

What this translates to, until I find a workaround, is the inability for me to train calves. I've already mentally developed a model of machine that can leave those ligaments alone and work calves ;) I might be rich one day yet :))

Put some golf balls in the freezer. Take them out after they are super cold and roll the painful spot over them for about 20 minutes. You may want to change the golf balls every 3-5 minutes so make sure you have about 6 - 10 in your freezer. I know it sounds goofy but I had it a couple of years a go and this works.
