Hi everyone. New to the site...found it on Google. (Whoohoo!) Trying to get healthier by my 30th b-day next summer. Immediate goal is my sister's wedding in 2 months...but overall, just wanna be better off in my next decade. :)
I joined the gym and am doing BodyPump classes (circuit on the days I can't make the class) and cardio - alternating days...right now 5 days a week...hopefully will be able to work a 6th day in soon.
Confused on the issue of protein shakes...can anyone help me out? I'm 5'8" and looking to lose overall about 50 pounds...working on learning about proper ways to eat right now and am getting confused by the messages about supplements.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!

What would you like to know about protein shakes? Perhaps we can help?

Thanks. :) I guess I just need to know if I should incorporate them or not. Some things I read say to eat 6 small meals and replace 2 of them with either a shake or meal replacement bar...and other things say to avoid them completely if you're trying to lose weight and gain muscle...that they're primarily made for body building purposes and defeat weight loss attempts. What's the real deal??

the real deal is there is millions of dollars spent on marketing these products.
If you are eating 6 meals a day, and acchieving your nutritional requirements then no, one wouldn't need to supplement with a protein shake.
Here's the but....but if you get tired of eating protein products such as tuna, chicken breast, cottage cheese, fish, you can always drink a shake. They are used as a supplement, not as a replacement. One would also have a protein shake after resistance training, in order to feed muscles.
It's up to you, and remember there is nothing better than real food. Supplement means in addition to.
Hope this helps.
