Thought I'd drop a line to say hello to everyone. I'm another newbie. Just getting into the whole fitness thing. I've always been a little heavy, but I quit smoking Jan 1 and do not want to gain that weight everyone talks about. I've tried to get into a fitness routine before but it only lasted a couple weeks before I find myself too busy to go to the gym. Its a new year and I've already changed alot in my life. I wonder if anyone will know who I am after this year's through.

I think that having this site to keep track of my progress will be a great help in staying motivated. A sincere thanks to the creators and maintainers of this site. Your all doing a great job!!

Hey bthomd:
I'm fairly new to FT as well, but welcome either way. Routine combined with setting up healthy eating habits have been the most important thing for me when I started to workout with weights and cardio...and still is, just now that I've got into my exercise and eating routines, it's a lot easier. Not quite 2nd nature, but all the same, way easier now than when I started out, being motivated that is.

I've tried to keep my weight sessions down to 45 minutes tops, and cardio 30 minutes for now, future limit will be 45 minutes. This for me works, because I don't need to motivate myself too much because the sessions are short in time, I won't look at working out/cardio as a long strenuous event.

The one thing most of us do constantly once beginning a workout/cardio regime is use the scale. As it's been mentioned to me, you should try to avoid the scale. It can be more of a motivation "Terminator", instead of a motivational tool. When you work out, for the most part I've found that the weight doesn't drop on the scale proportionally to the amount of exercise you do. I think it took 2 weeks or so before I dropped any real weight that stayed off. Example I worked out 4 days, and did cardio 3 days, for 2 weeks and I only lost about 3-4 lbs from the start to my measure in day.

Some may not be affected by not seeing the scale readout, but others it can be a plan killer. Measure yourself now, then in 2 weeks or so measure again. I have always weighed less in the morning as I believ most will, than at night, measure yourself at around the same time periods too.

Drink lots of water too, just get a bottle of water, sip it (I gulp it) and fill and sip or gulp throughout the day. By drinking enough water your body will release some of its water storage used for you bodies functions, and cells, because it will think that the body will have a constant source of water, therefore not needing to hold/store or horde all water which you consume. You will lose some weight due to this water retention being reduced, and you will be less hungry with a full stomach, and as well you will be a lot more healthy in your bodily functions.

I just wanted to send you a motivational hello, and good luck, don't skip a day of exercise unless your bed ridden, it's hard to get into it, but thats only in the beginning. Good luck with the not smoking, that is a great decision, you are already on the right track to better health.

Like I said, I am just new to FT environment, (2 months)but everyone I spoke with has been great, and you'll do great. Stick to your plan, keep it simple in the beginning, Rome wasn't built in 1 day, and in time you'll begin reaping your rewards...ie: a healthy body, and mind too. Cheers!!!:):dumbbell:
