I'm 61 years old, weight 184, 5ft 3
I'm so confused. I have a back problem and have been walking treadmill for about 20 minues a day five days a week. I've been eating 1000 calories a day and have not lost a pound. I think my back problem might get better if I could lose some weight.
I just found this board and am lost about healthy eating. I thought if you took in less calories than you expended you had to lose. I'm not, please any advise.
I know I'm starting late in life but this is where I am.

You'll need to eat a little more and I'll advice you to start biking instead of walking (since you got a back problem) and then slowly work your way up to 45 mins at each time.
Eat more proteins, veggies and good fat (take a look in the diet forum)
Good luck!

Don't be afraid to eat more calories. It is our biggest mistake. You probably would do better by eating at least 2000 a day. At 1000 your body is in a constant state of starvation and it won't give up the fat if it thinks it is not going to be fed enough. You've made the right decision and this is a great site to learn what needs to be done next. Welcome.

Thanks to everyone
I went to the gym today. Still only walked about 20 min. I did some resistance machines but couldn't do much. It's hard for me to eat more. I think I have been starving myself for so long that I don't want anything. I did go to walmart and got whey protein powder and drank one when I got home. Will try another later.
I didn't post all my information the first time. I have fribro myalga and I'm a type 2 diabetic. I think my back problem is the syatic nerve. I'm a mess. (sorry about the spelling on the medical terms)

It will probably continue to be 'hard' to do your exercises until you start feeding your body. I was in the same boat when I found this site 3 months ago. I was trying to exist and advance a the gym on 1200-1500 calories a day. I had been a hardcore dieter my whole life and was afraid to eat. For 2 weeks I made myself eat 2300 calories a day and added more protein until I was closer to 175g of protein a day. After 2 weeks I dropped the calories down to just under 2000, but kept my protein at 175-200 and my fat under 50g. After 2 months of that I had lost 5 pounds and quite a few inches. I eat 6 small meals or shakes a day and there are days when I feel like I don't want to eat, but I do it anyway. Before I started doing that I hadn't been able to keep any weight off for a year, even with going to the gym 3-4 x a week and walking. Changing our eating pattern seems to be one of the hardest things to do, but if you read the posts here you will see that you are not the only one who is afraid to eat more, but that is usually the first advice we get. Hang in there. When we get in a rut, change seems to be the answer.
