I was just reading the back of a Carb Solutions High Protein Bar and the carb content states:

Total Carbs 14
Non Impact Carbs -12
Net Carb Count 2

What does this mean? Does this protein bar have 14 carbs or 2 carbs? The package says its for low carb diets...

This sounds like a bunch of marketing crap. While not all fats are the same, I think all carbs are.

the concept of non-impact carbs is based not on sugars, but in fact sugar-alcohols. avoiding a deep chemical discussion, suffice it to say that sugar-alcohols have the same caloric value as regular sugars (4) but do not initiate an insulin response like sugars; basically, its almost zero. because of that, these were originally used for diabetics' foods, and have since found their way into supplements. some common ones are glycerine and sorbitol. the FDA has mandated this year that food labels must include sugar alcohols in carb listing, but can be identified as non-impact.

Not all fats are the same; not all proteins are the same; and not all carbs are the same.

Good post Michael. Not many people know.

Now do you know anything about if they'll stop using that much sugar alcohols (and use herbs like Stevia instead?)

they may start dropping some of the other sugar alcohols, but their not really going to do anything with glycerine: it is a necessary component in the actual production of these bars. plus, glycerine has numerous other health benfits.

dont look for stevia to be used too much more than it already is. the FDA forbids any company from labeling stevia as a sweetener. in other words, stevia cannot be used as or called a sweetener, though we all know that's what it's used for. plus, stevia is under some major recent investigations lately for side-effects allegations, so we'll see.
the only one i see making any head way is sucralose, but its very expensive right now.
but my own personal opinion: i dont know about the rest of ya's, but i'd rather just monitor my whole diet than put any more of that artificial crap into my body and have to worry about unknown side effects. i'll take the extra gram of sugar (LOL)!!!!

Great thanks again!

I agree about AVOIDING processed food but that's very often what we eat since it's soooo much easier to grap a protein bar than to bring your chicken salad......

Personally I would count the total carb content (just like I count the fibres as normal carbs as well), in this case 14 gr (= 56 calories).

Is the calories (from the sugar alcohol) in the total calorie amount written on the protein bar? (probably not!)

yes, the FDA has mandated that the calories from sugar alcohols be counted in the final over all caloric count.
