I was wondering what the difference is between the two. I have a Hex Bar so I have always done deadlifts this way, Ive never tried doing it with a barbell are they pretty much the exact same thing? David

Hex Bar is more quad dominant. The barbell deadlift puts more stress on the lower as well as upper back, and the hamstrings and glutes.
Also, hex bar deadlifts are less stressful on your muscle system, as in they are easier to recover from when using heavy weight.. hope this answers your question.

well back in highschool.....I dl'd on a hexbar X pounds......one day I was like coach....can I do straight bar...he was like sure...well need less to say X lbs didn't carry over to striaght bar....I had to lower it ALOT to keep from hurting myself.

Hex bar to be is kinda like the leg press, just caus eyou can leg press alot, don't mean you can squat alot. BUt if you squat alot, one can legpress alot....

If you can use a straight bar...save the hex bar for shrugs or somthing.

Thats because barbell deadlift requires much more from your posterior chain. I wouldn't discount the hex bar though andrew. Hex Bar deadlifts are great for when you want to give you lower back a rest, and still pull.

As for carryover, the carryover to the conventional deadlift is much greater than leg press to squat carryover.
I would say there would be a decent amount of carryover from hexbar deadlifting to squatting, as the movement is more like an upright squat.
If your doing a program like westside (which and andrew and I both use), then hex bar deadlifts would be a good ME lift to conjugate with.

Thats what I meant by conventional dl... However, I think the hex bar would be better suited as a supplemental lift for the squat.
