As far as the cooking and your weight set goes, you should be able just to search the web for information on both. You can get a great workout just using dumbbells and an adjustable bench. There are tons of sites that offer healthier recipes.
The best way to manage your diet is to understand your caloric needs. Copy and paste this link to get an idea of how many calories your body needs. http://bodybuilding.com/fun/calrmr.htm
I'd try to shoot for at least few hundred calories less than what the calculator gives you to start loosing weight. Also you're gonna need to start doing some cardio(my least favorite activity!) Try some brisk walking for 20 minutes a day for starters.
Don't be insulted, but a book that I found TREMENDOUSLY helpful when I started out is Fitness for Dummies. It is chocked full of the basics, and very easy to read. I've read tons of books since, but none that were as valuable as that one. I think it would be a great start for you, it was for me.

It is so great to have you here, steeldragon! Welcome to FT! You have the advantage, believe it or not, by being the cook in the house, maybe you don't know how to cook those meals that would benefit you right now, but I'll bet with some recipes, you could do yourself and those around you great justice! Check out the nutritional/supplement section here for some great beginnings, you can also go to some television healthy cooking shows that have online recipes, be creative and make it a great experience! The very best thing is that you are wanting to make a change to a healthier lifestyle and that is wonderful!! As far as the equipment, you can get a workout using kitchen chairs and cans of soup for that matter! Just check out the exercise plan here free at ft!! Good luck to you and keep coming!! If you go to the overweight forum, you can keep us updated on a more personal level, too!!

You should be able to find proper portion sizes online, or there a tons of books with that information. Most packaged food will have the nutritional information right on the box as well as the serving size that relates to it.

Hi Steeldragon, welcome to Ft.
You've made probably the most important first step in making changes by registering and posting!
I made lots of changes by doing small things. Reading labels on food is an eye-opener.
Try to educate yourself on what food actually is and does. Fats, carbs and protein are the things to be aware of. Watch your carb portions (bread, pasta, potatoes) and try to cut out saturated fats (animal fat, dairy fat). You need fat in your diet, but try to stick to mono-unsaturated (olive oil, fish oils, nuts).
Keep reading the forums and take it one day at a time.

Hey steel, just wanted to encourage you. Its rough in the beginning making the necessary changes. I work with alot of overweight people and they know it, but they dont even want to try. Keep it up and check out the diet thread here. It was really informative and eye opening for me.

i know what your talking about akin150, back in 1998 i was into bodybuilding and led a healthy lifestyle, october of that year i was hit by a truck while walking home. since than ive been trying to motivate myself to get back in shape but have lacked the will and the drive. whats changed is my attitude and the fear of dieing a young man, im thirty and fear time is running out so any information and motivation will be accepted .
im still new to the site and am not sure what the diet thread is .
