I've been working out on the treadmill at Lifetime fitness for about 6 weeks. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and am on medication. I was originally 200 pounds and felt awful. Now, I'm down to 184 pounds and hope to get to 150 to 160. I can't believe I good I feel about exercising and how bad I felt before. Doc says she'll take me off the meds once I lose an additional 10 pounds.
I do have a question -- exactly how fast should I be going on the treadmill? Right now I'm doing 45 minutes, 3.8 speed with an incline of 5 (I think that may be percentage). It says 5 but it goes all the way up to an 8.00 and down to 2.00. I burn about 400 calories and do just under 3 miles. Is this a good workout or should I push myself faster? oh, yeah, my HR usually is at 147-160.

Actually, it sounds like you've got it right in your target heart rate, and looks like you are losing weight steadily. Unless you stop losing weight, I would continue with what you are doing. Do you lift weights at all?

I agree! Sounds like yo are doing great! Running on a treadmill, you should try to stay around 4 mph (which you already are) that is without an incline. If you want to add something new, do a seach on HIIT - that will really help you drop the ##'s

Welcome to freetrainers angbates. Congratulations on the lifestyle change. It is amazing what our metabolism can do for us once we get it going. Keep up the good work and try and keep your HR between 55%-85% of you max which is 178 according to your age.

Wow!! HR 178, I'd better pick up the speed a little bit. I thought my max was 161. It has gotten up that far but I slowed down because I didn't want to have a heart attack --even though I didn't feel that way when I was doing it.

Thanks so much everyone:)

DON"T stay at 178!!!!!!

That is your max. Optimal is between 55-85%. which is between 98 and 151. Be careful, and be patient.
