Hi guys. I was just wondering; what are the general thoughts on “High Protein Food Bars” are they worth buying or not? If so is there one that actually tastes halfway decent, or is taste compromised for effectiveness?

Thanks

Everyone has their favorites, but I like Labrada bars and Designer bars. The Peaches and Lean is very good. Both are low in sugar. Met Rx is one you probably won't go wrong with. I think you are much better going with powders though, I always question when these bars were made, and with what quality. In a pinch though, you have to do what you have to do.

The reason the Muscle Tech bars are so good is the sugar content! I think there is 31 gr. of sugar in one bar!(cookies and creme). Might as well eat a Hershey bar and have a little protein on the side.

man, I shouldn't even have brought up the meso-tech cookies and cream thing. It's coming back to bite me in the butt.

Ageis...LOL...we all learn. Nothing is pointed at you. We all need to learn to read the whole nutrient label breakdown on things. They have ways now of hiding sugars too, like sugar alcohols for instance. Knowledge is power. We are all learning each and every day.

All the Met-rx ones I've seen generally have 30g of sugar...corn syrup is the first ingredient listed in one! And some contain glycerin, a sugar alcohol. Am I looking at the wrong Met-Rx bars?

metraa....yes, they (met rx) make 2 different type bars. The ones you see with all the sugar avoid unless the sugar doesn't mean anything to you. The ones with Metomyosyn protein, 33 gr. are extremely low in sugar, like 2 gr. per bar.

Thanks BB1, it looks like you are referring to the Protein Plus Met-rx bars.

Are the ones that contain sugar alcohols to be avoided? A lot of bars have that, touting that it doesn't effect insulin response like regular sugar does. I've heard it can have a laxative effect?

Almost all protein bars contain sugar alchohols. Many did this before FDA regulations mandated that they be counted as carbs on the label, though they are still not considered 'effective' carbs for the reason that you indicated.
