I just started a 12 week routine and it calls for a set rep pattern of 12,10,8,6 and then low weight for 12 reps after your hard 6 rep set. The first two sets are strictly warmup and not hard at all but the 8,6 sets are hard pushing, is this a good practice to burn out your muscles with low weight for 12 reps immediatly after a set of 6 to failure? If there is any benefit I would like to know. It really feels good, and by the end of the 12 it is burning nicely and about to failure.

The higher the reps...the more likely the lactic acid in the muscles is likely t build up and cause the burning sensation...the reasoning in part for the lower weight/higher rep...and pyramid is that you don't need to use as much weight...so it's safer...and you're also building base strength to handle the heavier weights...after the 12 weeks...you're are welcome to try a different routine...

OH so the burn is not what i'm really looking for in gaining muscle mass it's just the failure at high weight that I need? I'm new at this but I've read quite alot, I guess I just need to give it time to know what it should feel like. I just feel so wimpy just adding 25's to the bench bar but I guess you got to start somewhere huh.

keep ur chin up gumby77... i bet every BIG lifter starter somewhere around where u r right now ..
u'll get the burn when ur musles are sore from the poundings u give.. so thats okay.. pyramid ur weight during ur workouts.. just keep urself strict to form.. bad form would give u nothing.. and good form with even lower weights would do wonders..

Thank you I needed that lol ;). I guess I'm a very technical person and I like to do things the right way. so I do pay attention to my form in the mirror every time I lift, and I go nice and slow up and down. (makes a big difference) So I guess I'll keep plugging away with what i'm doing and challenge myself every time I lift. BTW the frst time I did a round of squats and did it to failure I as so amazed by the way it made me feel I just about cried LOL. man I had to limp out to the bathroom :)

lolzz... well if u pay attention to ur form in the mirror evertime u lift.. then u r not doing ur bench presses with proper form :winks:.. until and unless u have a mirror on ur ceiling ....
