I have just started doing high intensity interval training. I use the elliptical machine and begin with a 5 min warm up, then I start intervals. The ratio I have started out with is 20 seconds intense: 20 seconds of slow/rest. I repeat the 20:20 for 5 minutes which gives me 8 sets before my 5-10 minute cool down. I only do 5 minutes because that's all I can handle. My question is if this is a good hiit workout or if I should change it to a 20 sec intense and 40 sec rest with more reps. ?

That's the beauty of HIIT! You can switch it up, sometimes do it longer, and other times shorter. However, you don't want to go too long in a HIIT workout, 15-20 min. is ideal.
