Hello! I am new to this site but I'm glad I found it. I have been slowly gaining weight over the past few years, and it's been hard to determine if most of it is fat or muscle (my new general rule of thumb is assume fat first). I work out 5x a week, but now I realize that I need to lose a good 20 lbs of fat while gaining more mass (I have big upperbody/thin lower-a curse). I'm sure most people here know how difficult that really is (i.e., doing both at the same time). I have a slow metabolism, so I've always had bad experiences trying to bulk out and then slim down. The fact is that fat on my body is like an annoying friend - it seems to hang around long after the party is over. Anyway I started tracking my nutrition on this site and all I can say is holy crap!!! I didn't realize how much fat I was eating. Duh. However, I've also been failing to meet my protein requirements, which is a bit less than 1 gram per lbs. of body weight (I think). In fact I'm not even close. Doh!!! Also I was dismayed to find out that a bottle of wine actually doesn't have 50 grams of protein and 200 calories in it (that was a joke, btw). So maybe some lifestyle changes are called for...hmmm... I think I am a good example of someone who hasn't been entirely honest with himself. Well that is going to change. And I also learned that you can't trust family members to "clue you in" when the fat starts packing on. In fact, don't trust your family for anything nutrition/fitness related unless they work out with you as well. Just the way it is...most people have exceptionally unhealthy opinions of what is healthy, at least in this country. Ouch. Well later, Volsung

Volsung, you're definitely right about the family thing. They are the first to deny that we've added weight, unless there's one person in the family losing weight, and they tell everyone to lose.
I've also had a problem being honest with myself and have that annoying friend hanging around, that fat that sticks around far too much.
So keep it's time to start the honest evaluation and kick that annoying friend to the curb!
Good luck!
