I wan't to be able to hold my breath longer underwater. Right now I average about 2 mins but my best time is 2mins and 37 sec. If anyone has any routines or anything that i could do to improve my time please tell me.

I don't know. I would think that if you were pulled under by an undertow it wouldn't matter how long you could hold your breath. Maybe with any luck Charlie would be swimming by with his lumber and could give you a hand!
Sorry, not trying to make jokes about your question. I think that probably like anything else, you would have to just practice and work at it. No clue otherwise.

This may be a stupid question, but aside from pool side contests with your friends, why do you need to be able to hold your breath for a long time?

Well I don't really need to be able to but I would like to be able to and plus what if i am swimming and get pulled underwater by an undertow? If i was able to hold my breath for a while then there would be a chance of me surviving right? Right now I have a method I use that i found on wikipedia but i dont know how to improve my time.

The diaphram(sp) is the muscle that operates the lungs...my best guess would be stretch that..since that is what control breathing and depth of breathing. Taking deep breathes and hold them could I guess increase lung capacity.

Rip tides and under tows are best survived usually by not fighting them...and letting them cary to where they stop THEN swiming to safty...most peopel die from these by fighting them, wearing themselves down then drowning. A clear head will get you out of most situations instead of panicing.

My last pieace of advice....don't get in water known for rip tides and undertows...duh!?

thats what i was saying andrew you might be underwater for a while and if you can't hold your breath long you'll prolly just die from drowning.
lol to your last piece of advice. I was just giving a what if scenario since i don't have a real reason.

There are heaps of ways to be able to hold your breath longer, check out the sport of free diving for more info.
The methods that I use include, that worked well for me.
1)Take a deep breath of air and blow it all into a plastic bag covering your mouth, and just hypoventilate into it, do it for as long as you can or get slightly dizzy.
2)TAke a deep breath and hold it and walk for as long distance you can for this breath.
Through these methods I can not only hold my breath longer, but also run further without even doing a single second of cardio exercise. good if you want to pack on mass, but also increase aerobic capacity, without having to do cardio

Holding you breath is not just lung capacity, your nerves are part of it to, you have to remain calm to hold your breath longer.

when you hyperventilate you start to run low on oxygen in your body, so therefore you force your body to adapt to low oxygen levels. Then you can hold your breath longer. But a major part in holding you breath is also staying calm and relaxed, then you can do it longer.

Yeah BA Deep free divers get to the point of hyper ventlinting as it clears a lot of CO out of the blood stream and over fills the Oxygen stores in the body.
