I am trying to set up a home gym but have no idea where to start. I would like to buy some free weights and a bench for starters. Any help on where I should look would really be appreciated.

Good place to start!
Dumbbells and a bar are also good. If you can, buy a stability ball. They are good for core exercises and you can do a lot with them. Make sure your bench can incline too.

Maybe try eBay? Type into google 'fitness equipment.' Lots of opportunities to buy on line.

Only problem with EBay is shipping for weights is incredibly expensive. Ask around, many many people have equipment that they bought new and never use it.

Never thought of that...
Check out newspapers, garage sales... most department stores have on line catalogues... check 'em out...

It may be overkill for you but you might be interested in Power Blocks if room is an issue. Check the Yellow Pages for gym equipment. Power Blocks give you a dumbbell range from 5 lbs to an optional 125 lbs and sits in 2 square feet of space.

What about wal-mart? It doesn't get any cheaper than that (usually). Just make sure the equipment is regulation (or whatever the standard for fitness equipment is). I know my gym owner got a lot of his dumbells there and they are very nice. The same as in a sporting goods store and about 1/2 the price.

A 300lb set, including olympic bar, generally runs about 100 dollars. This and a simple bench should be all you need if you are just starting out.
