Hi,
I want to buy a home exercise machine and have about £400 to spend. It's around $700 but I can add more if necesarry. I was wondering what would be the best machine. All I can think of is a treadmill or a bike machine. Can anyone give me a nice sugestion and a machine which targets whole body.
Thanks

A good quality rowing machione or elipticle trainer tops the bike or treadmill.

But i always thought that treadmill was the best as it works out the whole body and u seem to be burning more calories and get fit.

I would think the advantage the ellip and rowing mach. have is that you are using both your upper and lower body at the same time. With the bike and treadmill your only using your legs. If you have the option, the best thing to do is to vary your cardio workouts; different equipment and/or different workout routines-hills, HIIT, steady pace etc.
-------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.

Sorry zak...I just realized you were looking for advice on what to buy, so my comment on using a variety of equipment likely doesn't apply. I own a treadmill and if I was to do my purchase over again I would definetly buy a good quality ellipticle trainer instead. I generally run for cardio, but I prefer to run outdoors and then use an ellip. for indoor cardio and for variety. I would buy something based more on what you like to do and make sure you buy something of good quality. If you haven't already tried the various equipment, I'd suggest you do that before you buy anything.

Hi,
to flyonthewall....I appreciate all comments. So that actually explains alot to me as the rowing machine trains arms and legs. I tried all the machines in my gym and I hated the eliptical...I kept on loosing my rythm. But i loved the treadmill. Also u said u run outside, I heard that this is bad for ur joints.
Thanks

zak, you're right about running outside being rough on the joints...and I have sore hips and knees to prove it....however, I love to get outside and I chose this as my main cardio. Having a good pair of running shoes, which I do, and good running form, which I don't, helps. That's why I use the ellip. when I don't run, because it is much easier on my joints. My philosophy (sp?) is do what ever it is you enjoy the most...that way you'll keep doing it!!! I have to admit my treadmill at home is collecting dust, but I do occationally use one at the gym--I learned the hard way (buying a treadmill that I don't use) that I don't work out much at home, except running outside! Hey, I could sell you my treadmill, but shipping would be rather expensive from Canada to the UK:(
Good Luck!

One other point is that treadmills tend to be more expensive because of the motor, so you could probably only get a very basic treadmill for the money, but a good quality elliptical or bike. Clearaly there is no point getting an elliptical if you don't like them and aren't going to use it.
