Supplements can be a great aid with your health and fitness goals. Combined with the proper exercise and nutritional plan they can be quite effective.

how do you know

Well, The wife was out of town and I was bored so I went to the local fitness/health store to peruse. Bought some weight racks, protien, and dumbells. There was a guy there with a laser machine that supposedly reads your immune system by analyzing antioxident activity and other stuff that I have no way of understanding. You hold your hand in front of the laser and a minute or 2 later..."ping". He tells me my reading is horrible and I will most surely die if I don't buy his Life-saving
vitamin-herbal-immune system supplement.

I wasn't the only one who was in mortal danger. Seems that everyone who took the laser quiz was dying .....quickly.
Well, how do you know if the claims by companies are true??
My Dr warned me that many supplements can interfere with legitimate medication. I don't think it's practical to run to or call your Dr every time you want to try a supplement or especially when the ad on tv tells you to. That will really piss off your Dr.

Aside from going to school for 25 years and getting degrees in medicine, fitness training, nutrition, snake oil, and common sense, how do you know?

Well, first off, if they didn't tell you that you needed the stuff, after the guy in the lab coat did the test, they wouldn't sell the product. I think the key here is "sell".
Hope you walked away.
There used to be a guy here (in Montreal) at a vitamin/natural remedie store. This guy attached a meter with 2 wires, and alligator clips to ones fingers, he sold minerals! (must be alot of people dieing, because I don't see him anymore)! It's sell sell sell.

Carivan , I cluched my chest and gasped a few times to see if I could get a few free samples. No go. Very few things part me from my money these days as the boss and I wanna retire on a boat. Have to really count the pennies.

The nutrition/fitness field is like everything else . I just wish I could find a more reliable B/S meter than my mostly empty head.

Nice goal to look forward to. I'm saving pennies for an RV.
Keep up the good posts.

If it is at a retail store then do not trust it. I would ask Rev8ball for advice on supplements....But I still would be carefull after all your are older than dirt!

I am actually familiar with the test that you had done, Charlie. Believe it or not, the technology behind it is sound - it is scientifically possible to read a person's antioxidant levels.

However, the prognosis that you weren't going to make it out of the store alive was prolly a little far fetched... :)

Bottom line: Antioxidants ARE very important, and the laser test should be used as a guideline, not a "YOU MUST BUY THIS NOW!" tool.

But it's just like Ivan said, it's all about sell, sell, sell!

People/companies will try to sell you anything. I had a guy come to my house one time to sell me water purifiers. Well, we just happen to live in an area where we have some of the very best water. Anyway, his argument was this...put down 2 bowls of water for your dog, one filtered with their filter, and one not, and see which one he will drink. I thought for a minute, and said, get out! He said, why? I told him, my dog likes to drink toilet water! How is he going to tell? Pretty poor sales pitch if you ask me.

Aaron, thats kind of why I asked. I have been eating very cleanly for the past year. A recent physical gave me the cleanest bill of health I've had in 10 years. There were several people taking the test who were preaching the diet and exercise regimine they had lived on for years and they tested even worse than me. I guess this guys credibility was shot with me because nobody tested well. In addition the only thing that would save us was a $75 per month vitamin program.

I think Gods intention was for us to get what we need from plants and dead animals not from 4 little pills a day at a cost of millions per pound.

I hear that, Charlie! If I took every vitamin and supplement that science recommended, I wouldn't have any room left in my stomach! :)

There are lots of variables, but barring any specific goal or condition that someone has, I always recommend a good multivitamin and some antioxidants - all of which can be achieved through eating, if the diet is in line.

I eat pretty well myself, but take the vits as preventative maintenance - just in case!

I think everyone should supplement with vitamins and antioxidants just for good health. Your arsenal should always contain Vit. C, Vit E(d-alpha tocopheral, not dl), B-Complex, and have zinc on hand in case of oncoming colds. I have been into health practioning for years before I ever started bodybuilding. These antioxidants are essential. Always take them. The best time to take E is of course with fats for transport, as it is of course fat soluble. All of the others are water soluble, and safe any time.

If you are a hard training resistance athlete, then you need these even moreso as you put your body through catabolism on an almost daily basis.

Ditto on the above about vitamins.
Furthermore, I was at an alzheimer confrence last Wednesday night, believe it or not, medical science has proved that 1000 of E daily, will help prevent the disease. The speaker was Dr. Serge Gauthier, one of the best in North America doing research on the disease. This news will be official here in Canada July 2004.
