How heavy should my weights be?

New to the site and starting my program (Fat loss and toning) on Monday. I was wondering how heavy I should be making my weights? Should I just barely be able to finish my reps? Should I be sore afterward? Will it do me any good if I make the weights really light and not be sore at all? I've never lifted weights or done anything in regards to fitness before now. Any suggestions?

Welcome to ft Miyu..

you should be performing your repetitions where you fail on the last one. For example, if you are give 12 repetitions to perform.. the weight you choose should allow you to do 12.. perhaps 13 at most. This will take trial and error.

You do not want to use weights where you can do 30 reps or something like that.. too light.. not enough resistance.

Good Luck.. and keep us posted.

Good question, I was wondering the same thing. Also, do you vary your weights per set of repetitions, or use the same weight for each set? I heard that you should increase the weight a little bit for each set.
