How important are supplements?

I am working out 5 x week , mostly weights, for 40 mins each time. I have been doing this for two months now. I see I am getting toned, but I wish it could be accelerated. How important are supplement to get a toned body?
If I don't use any supplements, is it still possible to be very toned?
What are the side effects of using supplements such as fatburners or performance enhancers?
