maintain a baseline diet before changing your caloric intake? Is 3 months about average for setting your baseline?

Question: When you say establishing a baseline, what exactly do you mean. I have search with FT buddy and all I can figure out is that the baseline is your mantenace calorie level. but you can set that? If so, this worries me because when I started here, I went straight onto a build mass workout and eating schedule. Have I screwed up my baseline by doing that?

I just mean the average amount of calories you get in - your body comes to accept an average amount and will perceive changes in intake differently. Chris Acteo explains it thus - if you take in 2,00 calories one day and 2800 another and 1800 yet another, your body is used to fluctuations and will not go into any type of fat-burning mode when you lower your intake because it knows that you will eat a higher calorie amount again soon. To set your base line you need to find your average intake (track for 3-4 days and average it) and stick to that amount closely for 4-6 weeks, so your body expects that calorie amount. Now you can lower your intake by 200 calories to start cutting, or raise it a little to gain.

Sure thing....I have been preaching this for eons it seems! You have to have a starting place from which to make intelligent calorie cuts or additions to take effect. This is why it is so vital to "set" your diet at a calorie amount...i.e...maintenance.

Thank you both. I never thought about it before, but it makes sense. So should I stop the mass building diet (If you can call it that) and Set a base line, or would it be better to wait until after I finish the diet in a few weeks?

hmm this makes sense...I'll be watching my calorie intake closely now to get myself a baseline. I am bad for fluctuating all the time. :(

for me it helps to eat the same thing every day, sometimes i get sick of eating the same thing every day but i don't do it for taste preference i do it to reach my goals and i switch it now and then by adding flavors to my chicken and what not. that way i can make a calorie change very easily.
