I have read the post by bb1fit on cardio questions but I am wondering how much cardio a day is reasonable for weight loss, I know it is different for every person but I heard that I should be doing 1 hour a day minimum at a good intensity. The program that was layed out for me on freetrainers was not as much cardio as I thought. I know weight training is important but should I not be doing at least an hour five times a week of cardio to lose weight? I do realize that weight training will raise my metabolism too.

Elizabeth weight training is the core of your weight loss plan. It is going to build the muscle that will burn the fat and it will burn the fat constantly. Cardio is important but the weight training is what will get you results. Your cardio needs to be around 20 minutes. Remember that cardio is called cardio because it's good for your heart, it strengthens the heart muscle. Weight training strengthens the other muscles.

Hi Elizabeth  When I quit smoking I gained 40 lbs, what worked for me was cardio 5x a week. I also did weight training 5x a week though not together. Cardio first thing in the morning, and weights 5 - 8 hours later. I had terrific results with that, so I still stick with it. I agree about the cardio program in here, but then it is called freetrainers

You could build up to 45 minutes, 5X week, but start with 20 minutes, every other day and add a few minutes to each session the following week. if you overdo cardio, you will fatigue your heart and get less results than doing it properly.
Natalie - the programs here are sound, many people have gotten good results from them. What a blessing that they have created this awesome 'free' site. That is why it is called freetrainers.
If you need to do cardio for 45 minutes, five days a week, either you aren't lifting heavy enough weights or your diet isn't right.

asimmer I agree with you this site is "Awesome", the best fitness site I have found online. I got lazy all summer, and as a result gained 20lbs to much travel & dining out. So now I am back to the gym weight training & yes 45 min 4-5x cardio to lose the fat gained. When I reach my goal again I slow down on cardio, but not weights. My cardio is also my stress release, my alone time so I run for the enjoyment. No matter where I am in my training my diet always needs work I will be good for a month, then bad for a few weeks, good, bad, the cycle continues. Since I found this site I have raised my goals. There is so much inspiration in here, that said I love your posts (always informative) and your pic's are incredible. You are an inspiration I imagine not only to me, but for a lot of us. Thanks :dumbbell:
