I just joined and am excited to find people who are so interested in fitness. My question is this: how long will it be before I begin to see results? I am 5' tall and weigh 170 lbs., so I am considerably overweight. I'm not so much interested in weight loss, per se, but I would like to get back to a consistent size 6 or 8 (right now I'm busting out of my size 14 pants). I have been working out for the past three weeks with a combo of cardio and weight training. Specifically, I spin 2 times a week, use an elliptical machine three times a week for about 30 min.; and attend a body works class 2 times a week (which is a "toning" class using light weights and multiple repititions). I also try to take a 20-30 minute walk every day during my lunch break. I keep a close watch on what I eat also and have been keeping my calories within the 1500 - 1800 range per day with a close watch on nutrition.
I realize it's only been three weeks, but I'm getting a little discouraged. Any help, advise and encouragement anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Erica |

Erica,
Do you have access to weights and have the ability to lift? You should try to incorporate weight training into your workout routine. By doing weights you are increasing lean muscle which burns more calories when doing nothing. You should try to do weight training at least three days a week. Try that and do not get discouraged. If you don't know how to do a weight routine pick one from this site. Fill out a profile and Welcome to FT. -------------- Dont Expect Results, Earn Them! Lance |

Erica, its also not unusual to get a little bigger before you start getting smaller. As you build muscle it will push the overlying fat out a bit. You're doin great. You didn't get this way over night, be patient and keep going. And welcome here.-------------- Foolish consistancies are the hobgoblins of small minds. Charlie | |

When I first started working out I did what you did- focused on cardio and did a "little" weight training. I felt good but wasn't seeing results. Then I stumbled upon ft and started one of their weight training programs. I'm on the last week of the 8 week program and have lost over 30 lbs! WEIGHT TRAINING IS KEY!!! Good luck to you!

I certainly agree with everyone, weight training is the ultimate fat burning, muscle building component so necessary to weight loss goals. I was doing cardio for 45 minutes 5-6 days a week for a few weeks before finding FT with some results, but not anything substantial, I took their suggestions and incorporated good eating habits and weight training into my routine 4 days a week and boxing each day, plus 30 minutes cardio 3 x a week (glider, walking, etc.). I can now see results in lost inches, lost weight and muscle definition which makes it so much nicer! My goal weight is 150-160 and I started here at 228 and am as of today down to 219 after only a few weeks. It can be done and you can do it with motivation and a good program! Good luck to you and welcome to FT!-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. to second what everyone else is saying, i don't do cardio...ever...and i keep losing weight. granted, i walk a lot because i work downtown and don't have the luxury of driving everywhere, but muscle building is the key to fat loss.-------------- i wish you ill, ice-t. margarine is a liar who announces, \"i am butter!\" |

so Howdie does no cardio...
How much cardio does everyone else do? I'm getting "back on track" and I don't want to burn myself out like I guess I always used to do. When I am in work out mode hard core I'll do an hour of cardio 6 days a week plus weight training. I can't run cause I don't like to, but I've thought about trying to make myself run again sonce the free gym at my apartment complex only has treadmills and bikes. I love the eliptical cross trainers- alas there isn't one there. What does everyone suggest for cardio? My body type is hourglass with a long torso so I look more like a pear from further away. I don't want to be bulking up my fat a$$ :-/ Thanks! |
