I've never done any kind of lifting before and I just signed up with this website to do some basic stuff for beginners. My question is how much weight (free weights) should I use to start? Is it worth buying a set of weights? Can soup cans work and How much should they weigh?

If your doing a home program....soup cans work, and also pop bottles, you can fill them with as much as you want to adjust the weights.
Start with what ever is comfortable for you and when you find you have trouble doing the last 3 reps of a set, increase the weight.
there is no right answer to how much one can lift, it differs for all of us.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Okay, so as long as I'm challenged throughout, then I'm at the right weight?

YEs basically if you have a rep range of 10 reps you should be able to get 8 ok, but struggle for the last 2-3 reps/ Then as the 10 reps get easy to do add weight. After a few weeks if you have no real free weights you might want to either get some or go to a gym. Good luck!!!!
-------------- IF YOU CAN STILL ITCH YOUR NOSE AFTER ARM DAY, GO DO ANOTHER SET!!!
