Can you tell me how to figure it out? I don't want to tire the muscle out too much before going into the real routine. Is 50% (of what I could do in the 1st real set) a good number?

try not to get obsessed with numbers or precentages - a warm up set is a preparation to the real workout by means of stretching/contracting the muscle to reduce the chance of injury. The warm up set is also about YOUR mindset - the set should be in perfect technical form which you should take forward into the "real" workout. Another thing to consider is that simple stretch exercises and a bit of aerobic work at the start of a workout can have the same effect - I have trained for several years now and find that i can go into the 1st set with max weight in order to provide a shock effect. This is another way of tricking stubbon muscle groups into positive gains but i wouldnt reccomend this to novice's - above all, listen to what your body is telling you - this will come with time and experience have fun and stay focused...........good luck!

baymaster is right, it doesnt matter how much weight you put on just as long as it isnt so much weight that you burn yourself out. all warming up does is get your blood flowing to your muscles. so a warmup jog would work just as well.

When I warm up before my routine I use 20% Thats because I feel comfortable with it and it gets my muscles stretched and ready for workout.
